Subject: Meeting 18 May - BCS Health Informatics London & SE Specialist Group

To members of the BCS Health Informatics Interactive Care Specialist Group (with apologies for cross posting and to anyone who has already booked):

The following  BCS Health Informatics London & SE Specialist Group event on 18 May and which is open to all may be of interest.

The meeting will start at 6.00 (Refreshments available from 5.30)
and is at the BCS in the Davidson Building, 5 Southampton Street, WC2E 7HA

The speakers are:

i) Andy Capey, Data & Security Manager at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust, whose topic is "Lessons from the failure of a key system" or "Sometimes paper is the most reliable solid state device we have"

ii) Dr Simon de Lusignan, Head of Biomedical Informatics at St George's Medical School, London University, whose topic will be "Using routinely collected general practice data for quality improvement and research: Opportunities and Challenges".

The abstract for Dr de Lusignan's talk is as follows:

Historically, routinely collected data has underpinned important research in general practice. Computerisation now makes large volumes of data readily available. UK general practice is almost universally computerised, and is now in the second year of receiving quality payments based on the quality of care, as recorded on general practice computer systems. Primary care informatics is an emerging scientific discipline concerned with the study of data, information and knowledge and how they can be harnessed to improve health and primary medical care.

This session will explore the opportunities and challenges of working with routinely collected data; and suggest an approach that may help ensure that the correct meaning is inferred from clinical data.

St George's is a member of the West Focus alliance of universities and is partnering Kingston University in the introduction of a new Biomedical Informatics degree.

In order to meet BCS security requirements and to ensure that there is sufficient food, please email Barrie Winnard (Barrie.Winnard@...)  before 11 May if possible.
