Research bursaries provide support for doctoral research projects.
The bursaries are for three years available on a full-time basis and
cover a maintenance award, fee payments and research support costs.
Support for three years is subject to satisfactory progress. Candidates
participate in a taught research training programme in their first year.
The level of the maintenance element of the Research Bursary is linked to
the level of corresponding awards by research councils and is subject to
regular review. The current maintenance payments for 2005/06 bursaries is
around £12,000.
Applicants for Postgraduate Research Bursaries should have at least a
good honours degree or equivalent. Applicants with Masters degrees are
welcome.
Applicants should submit, in hard copy and electronically, an application
form plus a 1,000-2,000 word research proposal indicating the
following:
· The topic area to be researched
· The innovation in the research project, such as how the topic will
break new ground
· The initial intended research methodology
· A clear timetable
These bursaries are open both to UK/EU students and to international
students (non-UK/EU citizens). The successful candidates will register on
a full-time basis for a period of three years starting in October 2006
and will work with other researchers in the School of Computing.
Candidates will be selected on the basis of the strength of the research
project, the strength of the candidate’s qualifications and suitability
for studying a PhD and, how well the research project fits into existing
research activities within the School of Computing.
