I'm sure he'd be interested in responses from non-members of AMIA...

Some time ago, I posted a message regarding a survey of Medical
Informatics-related hiring/interview experiences.  I'm in the process of
formulating the questions for such a survey.  My hypothesis is that there
is significant misunderstanding in the healthcare and biomedical R&D
industries regarding medical informatics and the contributions
informaticians make (or can make) if given the opportunity. The
misunderstanding manifests as suboptimal job formulation, candidate
identification, interview processes, hiring, organizational positioning,
and on-the-job difficulties for informaticians, suggesting a need for
better understanding of the informatician’s role in clinical or research
settings.

In testing the hypothesis,  I envision a survey (e.g, across the
membership of AMIA) to see if anecdotal experiences I've collected over
the past decade occur to a degree that might significantly limit
opportunities and contributions of highly-skilled, cross-disciplinary
healthcare informatics personnel.  If so, educational action and advocacy
would be suggested to enhance the contribution of informaticians and
increase the ROI of efforts to train them at federal and institutional
levels.

I plan to develop the survey questions based upon a list of experiences
and observations.  I am interested in feedback on the list.  The list
originates from communications with others in informatics, as well as with
executives, recruiters and HR personnel in industry.

The list of observations is at:

I am interested in feedback on this list.  Too broad?  Too uncommon?
Off-base?  etc.

Regards,

Scot
