"If only the NHS knew what the NHS knows".

Public lecture in Health Informatics by Dr Mike Stein, Medic-to-Medic

(creator of the "Map of Medicine").

Joint event hosted by City University, London,

Evening of Monday 17th January 2005,

This event is being sponsored by the City University (Centre for Health Informatics) and the UK Health Informatics Society (UKHiS).

“This event offers UKCHIP registrants the opportunity for continuing professional development”

Dr Mike Stein has addressed the challenge to simplify and coordinate access to information for clinicians through work on the "Map of Medicine". As the medical director of the Map of Medicine project based at the Royal Free Hospital, London has worked closely with many hospital colleagues and GPs to develop a knowledge based system linking evidence, guidelines and administrative forms across 250 clinical pathways and integrated via a visual interface. The importance of the "map" and related system was recognised earlier this year when both were adopted by the NHS as coordinating mechanisms for existing national and local information sources, including NeLH, Trust websites and cross-links with NPFIT.

The approach aims to improve the quality of care, promote service integration and encourage tailoring of the system at local level.

Dr Stein's lecture is therefore particularly timely.
