Dear colleagues,
Attached below is information on the INASP Health Links gateway that evaluates and categorizes free access, health websites. Although geared to the developing country audience, the website would be of use to institutions and individuals that have reliable Internet access but limited print resources. Please send the description and url to any colleagues who would find this site of value.
Yours truly,
Lenny Rhine, Health Science Center Libraries - University of Florida
INASP Health Links ( http://www.inasp.info/health/links/ ) is a Gateway to more than 600 selected websites for health professionals, medical library communities, publishers, and NGOs in developing and transitional countries.
It consists of three sections General Resources, Subject Index and Library and Publishing Support and Use of ICTs. Each section has several pages of hyperlinks, arranged alphabetically. Each hyperlink carries a brief description of the site concerned and note multiple languages if applicable. Sites that have a specific focus on users in developing countries are marked with a magnifying glass symbol.
The development and maintenance of 'INASP Health Links' is facilitated and monitored by a voluntary International Advisory Group. The sites are selected and evaluated according to criteria adapted from the evaluation questions developed by BIOME/OMNI, a gateway to Internet resources in the health and life sciences. The essential criterion is that the site contains information that is relevant for developing and transitional countries. The site is certified as being in compliance with HONcode (Health on the Net Foundation).
While a set of criteria are employed, the evaluation of each specific website is not exhaustive and there is no guarantee of the accuracy for all the content contained of recommended sites. The addresses of the links are checked for functionality approximately every eight weeks.
INASP Health Links is offered freely for use as a template by medical libraries and institutions in developing and transitional countries. It is compiled by Lenny Rhine, University of Florida Health Sciences Center Library and edited by Neil Pakenham-Walsh, INASP. INASP Health Links is a service of INASP-Health (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications), a complementary package of communication tools and reference resources for health information development in the developing world.
