Your last message of 1/13 cleared up a good deal of
my misunderstanding regarding basics as intended.
Using C=256 (I hadnt realized the modern scientific
standard puts C right on the binary number series), I now
have F#=362.6 for the Earth tone and have calculated
all the just intonations for the other tones in this octave,
finding everything as you have indicated. Here is
the chromatic octave between C=256 & C=512:

It wasnt until I looked up the diameters of Mercury
and Neptune and made the corresponding calculations for
their tones, that the pattern thus created really
began to make sense, and upon some reflection over the last
week has led me to some really exciting
realizations, I have to tell you! So here is what I have so far for
planetary correspondences:

You have indicated that the tone of Jupiter, the
greatest of all the planets within our solar system is the same
as the Sound of the Universe, so Jupiter is the way
our system attunes to the universal sound, which certainly
seems fitting. In astrology Jupiter is called the
Greater Benefic, the rulerof Sagittarius, and is regarded as the
most fortunate of all the planetary influences. So
this idea that Jupiter has the most harmonious attunement
with the grand scheme of things accords very well.



(I wonder if you have any thought on what the
analogue tone of the Milky Way galaxy might beor whether the
question would be meaningful in your scheme.)



Then the Sun, the Moon, the J Moons, Saturn, &
Uranus all fall near the tone F. This was a bit of a surprise to
me as I said earlier, but again upon reflection
makes a great deal of sense even if it changes my way of
thinking about the fundamental nature of the
planetary interactions as I have come to think about them. For
example the Sun, Moon & Saturn are thought to be the
greatest of the heavenly powers that influence our
lives in fundamentally different ways. I would have
previously imagined that they would all, therefore, sound
different tones. But if they are resonating at the
same position within this synthetic octave, then it is probably
more natural to think of them as having the same
basic carrier frequency but modulated with differing content
or program materiallike great broadcast radio or TV
stations. Hence they compete or interfere with each
other, not unlike the way my car radio switches
between the Santa Cruz station that is broadcasting at 88.9
and the Sacramento station that is also broadcasting
at 88.9 as I drive around.



So the reason that the Sun, Moon & Saturn are so
dissimilar or conflicted (as they are believed to be in
astrology) is not that they are so different
(different tones) but that they are so similareach powerfully
attempting to anchor the fundamental keynote, the
Sound of the Solar System at approximately the tone F.
The Sun, of course, is by far the greatest of the
three in power (and thus represents the tone of the soul or
deep self at the corresponding human level), while
the Moon, by being of nearly exactly the same apparent
size as the Sun because so much closer to Earth,
thus represents the early phase of life when imprinting
occurs (the nurture component). Saturn, then, chimes
in as only a slightly weaker or less significant influence,
again at the same keynote, and represents the same
fundamental but at the mature stage of life and the
powerful influence of karma from past lives
(continuity of the fundamental keynote). Of course there would be
something like a combined complex modulation of the
fundamental carrier by all the sources contributing at
that frequency.



This is great stuff (!) and as good as any symbolic
or imaginal thinking that astrologers have some up with to
explain what is seen as correspondences in real
people.



One of the biggest and most welcome surprises in all
of this that is occurring around the keynote is that of
Uranus, the ruler of the sign Aquarius, the one
associated with the New Age which the precession of the
Equinoxes will begin to show as rising on the
eastern horizon on Vernal Equinox each year now. There is no
marking in the sky to indicate when this will have
exactly happened, but my most reliable source (Hilarion)
has said that the exact point of transition occurred
in January of 1998. So (let us suppose) we are now in the
New Age ruled by Uranus, again resounding at same
octaval keynote, (increasingly?) adding its modulation
to the program of the Sound of the Solar System. And
again, this program fits into a different niche: Uranus
represents the extremes, the best and the worst, the
tails of the bell curve just as the Sun represents the
steady central portion of the bell.



So just as the Sun and the Moon represent a pair of
polar opposites (Sol & Luna in the Mystic Marriage),
Saturn & Uranus represent a similar pair of polar
opposites (conservative & radical, standard science &
breakthrough science, logic & intuition, etc.). Old
Carl Jung himself would have loved thishe was quite
preoccupied with this kind of fourfold positioning
of polar opposites crossed together. In astrology the Solar
system is divided between the inner planets (Mercury
to Saturn, the last one visible to the naked eye) and the
outer planets (Uranus to Pluto or Transpluto if it
there turns out eventually to be one, as many astrologers are
convinced). The inner planets represent the
conscious awareness while the outer planets represent the
Unconscious. So the Saturn-Uranus duality also
represents the boundary between the conscious attitude and
the Unconscious, and once again, the finding that
they are countervailing similars rather than naturally
dissonant qualities is instructive.



So the four keynote resonators (Sun, Moon, Saturn, &
Uranus) together deliver the mainstream resonance
driving the life force within the Solar System. The
new addition on the list that astrologers dont know anything
about, of course, are the Moons of Jupiter, if you
are correct, also sounding the tone F and making a major
third interval with Jupiter. Presumably, for
astrologers, with their single 2D readout (angular location and
direction in the ecliptic), Jove and His Moons are
one and the same, but I have a feeling that there is
something more to discover having gained this new
awareness.



The situation of Mercury, in this Hotson planetary
tuning, is particularly interesting because its resonance falls
exactly between two just tones, B & C, and is the
only planetary tone that does so. The symbolic
representation of Mercury has always been portrayed
as dualistic in the various esoteric traditions of
astrology and alchemy, and this would be a perfect
reason for this to be the case. The tone of Mercury is
closest to that of Jupiter, and both are regarded as
the mentalplanets, associated with travel,
communication, teaching, understanding universals,
etc., with Jupiter is the greater.



Our Earth then, along with Mars, is at F#, a fourth
interval aboveJupiter. This is also interesting in spite of the
notion that Venus is usually considered Earths
sisterplanet. But Earth & Mars are also just a semitone away
from the Sound of the Solar System (F) and thus
rather dissonant. One of the most interesting presentations
of esoteric astrology is that of Alice A. Bailey
(where I had gotten some of my ideals about some of this a
couple or three decades ago) which states that only
Earth and Mars (and Pluto), among all the planets the
solar system, are non-sacred, which I would now
interpret as most dissonantrelative to the dominant F.



And finally Neptune at A, a major third above F, the
key tone of the Solar System and the highest tone on the
synthetic octave. Neptune, as ruler of Pisces, is
usually regarded as the most spiritualor romantic of all the
planetary influences or the most confusinga fitting
combination in many ways. I have previously tended to see
Uranus and Neptune as on an equal footing regarding
strength, but the Hotson tuning (substitute your own
designation) tends to more naturally show why Uranus
is so much more significant (falling into the F tone
powergroup). This by itself is a significant and
valuable re-calibration.



So all this fits into an idea of the planetary tones
as carrier frequencies that are somehow modulated or
given program content. How and by what or whom Im
not sure, but the esoteric traditions regard the planets
as grand living beings (viz. the Gaia Hypothesis) if
they have magnetic fields. So it may be that the basic
planetary tone is set by the light diameter, the
nature of the overlay or modulation is more a function of the
planetary core that generates the magnetic field and
its artifacts. This would allow the powerful and dynamic
relationship among the Sun, Jupiter and the J Moons
that you have described to assume the central position
it deserves, as the primary interaction between the
Sound of the Universe and the Sound of the Solar
System.



Anyway, these are the current musings, but I have to
mention one other item that I have found to be one of the
most exciting developments on the alternative
science frontier. Its in the geology category and is being called
global expansion tectonics, the idea being that much
of what we have tried to explain with continental drift
tectonics is far better explained by a slowly
expanding planet that is also gaining mass (!). Evidently the most
convincing evidence is that modern satellite laser
ranging has shown that the earth is increasing in diameter
by about 18 mm annually, but the finding was thrown
out by the expertsas some kind of sampling or
atmospheric aberration since it couldnt be true
(because the planetary diameter has to be fixed). But almost
all of the earth and life sciences change if this is
right. The author of the piece I saw (called Global Expansion
Tectonics, which has a bibliography) is James Maxlow
in Nexus v. 7, No. 6 (Nov-Dec, 2000).



This is obviously interesting in view of your use of
planetary diameters, providing a slow growth evolutionary
dynamic for planetary toning. One has to wonder if
the other planets, especially the gas giants, are also
expanding.
