I'd like to see the Xtracycle too as would, I suspect, others in the group. Perhaps it's time to get the BikingRoseville group together. Any preferences as to when and where? My April is very busy, so May would be the earliest for me. Weekday evening or weekend? Meet at a restaurant?
Send me your ideas, and I'll organize.

How do yoou intend to ride to Lincoln? Is there a bike route/path that I am not aware of? I ride down industrial as 65 is really noise and not a plesant ride at all. I am not even sure if it is possible to use the bike lanes on 65 anymore. Industrial is not a smooth ride either , the so called bike lane is hit and miss. The ride from Roseville to Lincoln is really level so the hills you speak of must be Sierra College Blvd. since it really isn't 40 miles from Roseville to Lincoln and back
I too would really like to see the Xtra-cycle in person as I use my bike/s for transportation and not recreation and have for a long time thought of getting an Xtracycle.

Today I noticed a couple of things about
the Miner's Ravine and False Ravine
trails:
1. There are lots of flowers
blooming now. Very pretty!
2. There have been major
improvements in the signage on the
trail. Every offramp is labeled
with the street or trailhead name
it leads to. This is great! Thanks
to all those who worked on these
improvements!

For many years I commuted between HP in west Roseville and Newcastle.
Often I went thru Lincoln. In the years before the casino, I would
sometimes take Industrial. It wasn't great, but it was fast and there
wasn't too much traffic (if you didn't mind the few concrete trucks
and solid waste trucks). After the casino opened, I figured there was
too great a chance of getting run over by someone that was in a big
hurry to loose their money, or was drunk after loosing all their money.
Hwy 65 is also an option. I think it is legal to get on at Blue Oaks,
I didn't do it too often, but it was the fastest way to get there.
Currently the best way that isn't much longer is this route that takes
roads east of 65 and goes by the new Rocklin HS. There is a very
badly designed section of bike path for part of this route (it tries
to be a class 1 path, off street, but requires one to make some very
unsafe moves to use it, I just ride on the road):

Hello Mark,
I plan to drive to the starting point of
the ride, which is McBean Park in
Lincoln, then bike their 40 mile route
in the hills East of Lincoln. More info
on the ride here:

Yeah, I've never biked up 65 (Yikes!) or
Industrial. I've taken Fiddyment to
Moore to Dowd to Wise to get around
Lincoln. Sierra College is a much more
interesting way to go if you want to
head to Lincoln.

Ya i suppose Xtracyclist are somewhat a breed of their own. Hauling
junkies I guess!! lol I'm constantly taking pics of large loads that
I've hauled.
One of my goals is to be able to ride it least 20 miles with my two
dogs on a trailer & my X full of camping gear.
Wow - you must be fast or have better endurance than me!!
I have some vids of the Xtracycles on youtube, just search my user
name 'akyramoto'

Wow, that's cool! I've never heard of
those. I've been meaning to put a rack
and bags on one of my old bikes for
grocery store runs, but the
xtracycle.com pages are something else.

If it were flat, and I were to
overestimate my abilities, I'd say 2
hours. Since there are hills, and I am
a realist, I'd say around 3.5 hours not
including breaks. :)

welcome!! no Tour De Lincoln for me, I think 40 miles is out of my
reach at the moment, I ride an Xtracycle so I'm a 'utility' cyclist I
guess you would call it.
I'm curious - about how long would it take to do the 40 miles?

Want to see what the City of Roseville is planning over the next 20 years to make it easier to get around by bike? Check out the Bicycle Master Plan. This document and the associated environmental impact document are now available for review and public comment at the link below.
Both will be reviewed at upcoming city meetings as shown at the above web page. Please take some time to review the BMP and chime in with your feedback.
Thanks,

Any Roseville Cyclists planning to bike
North on Sierra College over I-80 should
be aware of the closure and construction
detour starting tomorrow. Sounds like
next week Sierra College@I/80 will be
completely closed.

I hope you can join us at Bikefest this year. It takes a team of volunteers to make it a success. A strong showing by BikingRoseville members would so helpful in demonstrating that we want to work hand-in-hand with the City on making cycling more viable for more people.
Bikefest will be Saturday, October 4 at Quail Glenn Elementary on Canevari from 7 am to 1 pm. If you think you can help, please mark your calendar and let me know.
Our 2008 bike ed class schedule is now available on our website, www.bikingroseville.org. This year, we have changed the class offering. Instead of one 10 hour course held over multiple days, we are offering two separate classes. Road Skills I is a four hour classroom only class that covers the basics. Road Skills II is a six hour class focused on applying Road Skills I on your bike.
For some, Road Skills I will be all they want. For those who want to practice their skills in traffic, they can add Road Skills II. We are hopeful that this two class format will make bike ed viable for more people.
If you know anyone who would benefit from our bike ed classes, please point them to the website or have them send us an email.
Thanks,

Yup, you're correct - the Free rad mounts to almost any 26" bicycle -
they also have a version for 700c. I have a 2006 Kona Smoke commuter
bike, and my boyfriend, Steve, has his mounted on a an Electra Townie 21.
kit comes complete with a long chain, and a long brake cable for your
rear brake. It usually takes a LBS about 1-2 hours to install. If
you're pretty bicycle savvy - you could probably install yourself.
the Free Rad frame itself only adds 5lbs to your bike.
So theres no mod to your bike, if you wanted to take it off & put it
on a different bike - it can come off & the old bike will be back to
'normal'.
Ya the DLG is my favorite, it makes you feel a whole lot safer! but
it's also really cool to ride on a cloud of light, makes night riding
fun & not scary

So if I understand correctly, you don't need to modify a standard
bike frame to convert to Xtracycle, true?

Oh the big meet up on my flickr pic??
that was when the Ginger Ninja's and the Pleasant Revolution were
rolling through town. Kipchoge Spencer is the singer for the Ginger
Ninja's & he co-designed the Xtracycle. So it was neat meeting all
of them, there were 16 Xtracycles total - including my group of 3.
we rode with them from King Road down to Douglas along auburn folsom Road.

That trip sounds awesome! I hope you share a link to some pics!!Thats
what I would like to do eventually - some bicycle camping.
this year I"m trying to get a stokemonkey so I can remain car free but
be able to travel greater distances while still hauling a large load -
aka my dogs!! haha

Those are some great pics of the Xtracycle. What kind
of meetup was that, do they do it often?
I really like the integrated frame from Surly, but it
is very pricey:
http://www.xtracycle.com/product_info.php?cPath=5&products_id=123
I don't have an Xtracycle yet, but it's definitely
high on my list of next bikes. My current workhorse
is a Trek 520 tour bike with front and back racks.
Tomorrow I'm taking it on a train to Seattle and
riding it back along the coast to SF, camping along
the way.
I'll be moving to Roseville this summer, looking
forward to meeting other cyclists out there.

Ah! the Xtracycle is amazing. It's a steel frame attachment ( called
the 'free radical') that pushes your rear wheel back 15", it then has
other aluminum frame pieces that fit into the main steel part - to
form a fram around your rear wheel. It then has these really awesome
bags - like over sized panniers called 'freeloaders'. they can hold
amazing amounts of stuff - they're completely adjustable & can pretty
much hold anything you want. Over the top you have a piece of wood
called the snap deck - its works as a table, footrest, places for
those items that don't fit in your bags, or a place for a friend to
ride. Since your freeloader bags sit not much higher than the back
wheel it handles amazingly loaded. Then length isn't all that
noticeable either, when you see it it looks like it would be hard to
ride, but it isn't-it's actually more stable because of the long
wheelbase.
They have other add ons like the 'wideloaders' which i have, they
slide in under your bags to hold really wide items more easily. I
actually put those on, then throw a rubber maid tote on it & tie it
down & take my dog for rides - my 50lb border collie!! haha!
There are so many things you can do with it. I grocery shop in all the
time, run to the post office etc. It's been my 'car' for the last
year! I love it
I have tons of pic on Flickr under the name akyramoto.
i will also try to post some on here.
if you ever wanted to use your bike to really do all the thing you
would with a car, check out the Xtracycle.

I've never seen an Exracycle in the flesh (or is it in the steel?).

I'm always looking for more people to ride with. I made a website for
riders in this area

feel free to check it out.
I love seeing people use the bicycle as transprotation, I would like
to see cities become more bicycle friendly. I think that if some of
them do more people would be inclined to ride - and the more people on
bicycles the more benefit to all of us.
so hello!! I hope everyone has a great week & gets to go ride in this
beautiful weather!
Pretty sad news these days from the biking world as Hans Monderman and
Sheldon Brown have died earlier this year.
Monderman was a visionary when it came to intelligent urban design. He
got rid of most traffic signs and signals. His take was that you can't
fix a bad road design with signs. His projects usually slowed down
traffic and he sometimes tested his intersections by walking
blindfolded and backwards across the street. I think his passing is a
real blow not only for bicyclists, but for communities in general.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article3167372.ece
Sheldon Brown also passed away. His website was/is one heck of a
resource for bicyclists. I made extensive use of it when I had to give
a presentation about brakes in my LCI seminar.
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/
Rest in peace.
This comes from St. Louis via SABA. They recognized that so much of the typical bicycling message is safety oriented. They wanted a more positive spin on choosing to "get there by bike". Check it out. It's a good lesson for Chris and me as we restructure our bike ed classes for this year. Safety is a means to the goal (making it easy to choose to get there by bike) rather than the goal itself.
Folks,
I am working on an effort to get Cal Trans District 3 (Placer, and 10
other nearby counties) to be more bike/ped friendly.
Two weeks ago, a number of advocates met with Will Kempton, Director of
CalTrans. He has an interest in making CalTrans more bike friendly,
and as a result of these meetings, I am in the process of setting up a
meeting with Jody Jones, director of D3. My challenge is that my view
of D3 issues has been rather narrow, based on what I know is going on
where I ride, and issues in Sacramento City/County.
I am looking to find out what is going on in Placer county regarding
bicycle accommodations in CalTrans projects (state and federal
highways and the intersections with them, such as 65, 80, 193, 49,
etc.) Does anyone have any information that would be helpful? Either
positive or negative is good. Also, has anyone been proactively
reviewing designs of future projects for bicycle issues? Has anyone
had any contact with CalTrans -- either good or bad?
Jim
Tune your radio to KQED Monday morning (89.3 Sacramento, 88.5 in the Bay Area) for one cyclist's perspective of her rights to the roadway. Apparently, this woman recently took a Bike Ed class.
I haven't hear this piece yet, but I don't care for the wording "your lane". This seems to imply that roadway lanes are for motorists only. The lane is for all roadway users, CVC 21202 notwithstanding.
FYI, this event was cancelled as it conflicted with a charity bike ride originating in Roseville on the same day.

BikingRoseville Members,
The City of Roseville, City of Auburn and Placer County are planning to kick off "May is Bike Month" with a bike ride on Saturday, May 3. Preliminary plans are to hold two simultaneous rides, one originating in Roseville and one in Auburn beginning mid morning. Both would end at Loomis Basin Community Park. There are plans to offer snacks and safety checks at the starting points and a lunch and raffle at the end.
Please consider volunteering to support this ride. Volunteers will be needed to register participants, hand out t-shirts and snacks, support the riders during the ride and serve food at the finish. As we get closer to the date, I'll send a formal request to volunteer. For now, please save the date.
Thanks,
David
