area riding notes: construction areas   Message List

For those of you ambitious enough to
venture out of town for
mayisbikemonth.com mileage, here are a
my riding notes on areas with recently
completed, in-progress, or planned
construction.

- Sierra College Blvd and I-80. The
Sierra College Blvd and I-80 overpass
project construction is now finished.
The surface is smooth, and the bike
lane is wide and clearly marked. This
is an improvement over the old
overcrossing. However, as you begin
to climb the bridge in either
direction, you will cross in front of
the I-80 onramp, and in front of
accelerating, freeway-bound traffic.
I'm not sure what the safest way to
cross the bridge is.

- Hazel Ave over the American River
Bridge. The Hazel Ave bridge over the
American River will gain two lanes in
a widening project kicked off on April
3. The actual construction is not
scheduled to start until May.

Once construction begins in this area,
you may want to find an alternate
route over the American River. One
possibility is to cross on the
pedestrian bridge in Fair Oaks at the
end of Bridge Street.

- Folsom Lake Crossing Bridge. The city
of Folsom opened a new bridge at the
end of March. It is easy to get to
from both Auburn-Folsom Road and the
American River Trail between Beal's
Point and Mountain Oak Avenue. The
bridge's bike lanes are very wide, and
the bridge also has a path used by
both cyclists and pedestrians. From
Auburn-Folsom, the bridge leads to the
north side of Folsom State Prison, and
will connect to E. Natoma street and
old Folsom.

- Auburn-Folsom road between Douglas and
Greenback in Folsom was free of
construction last time I rode it
except for right around Beal's Point.
I haven't had a chance to check
between Douglas and Lincoln Way in
Auburn. I haven't combed through the
county website to figure out if
construction is supposed to be
completed now.
