I happened to run by this unfortunate event this morning. It
looks like the cyclist was hit on the bridge over the underpass. He was hit
hard enough to knock stuff onto the path below which was also closed. By the
look of the pickup, and the smashed front window (right side), I'd say it's
likely the truck hit the cyclist from behind. This is a sad day for roseville
bicycling and a particularly bad day for our bicycle brother's family :(

The
only possibility I can see at that location is that one party left their
lane. Baring medical events, that does seem very
strange. There is a right hand bend there, but it doesn't look
like enough of one to cause the truck to cut the corner.
I
road Pleasent Grove Blvd twice in the dark last month, and it was well lit,
clean, smooth, wide. Come to think of it, one thing caused me to leave my
lane coming home at 9 p.m. (after checking back for traffic of course) -
the sprinklers. There were places where staying in
the bike lane would have drenched me.
A
note on headphones- even if he were wearing headphones, that would be a
lesser cause at night, where he should have seen the lights of the turck
and known he was being overtaken. Especially at 4 a.m. when being
overtaken is pretty rare.

This is very terrible news, and I hope my wife does not see it.

I agree with most of the posts in the story and with David. We do have
Drivers who go too fast and/or do not pay much attention on these streets, and
we do have bicyclists that do the wrong thing (though with the initial report
of helmet, lights and no mention of headphones I do not think this person was
not following the rules). Unfortunately the Bicyclist suffers in
both situations. My sympathy to this man's family.
I think the best thing for this is to get more bikes on the road, though
stories like this don't help the cause.
