South of Santa Barbara there is also a stretch where
the old Highway 1 disappears. For a stretch (5 miles?)
cyclists are allowed on Highway 101. Club rides
frequently go down there. I have not heard of a
bicyclist getting damaged, but there were a few car
accidents, including one with a person I knew involved
(not at fault and badly injured).

Going north from SB you also can ride on 101 for many
miles.
