Sometimes, it's the only way to get from A to B. In California, you
can ride the freeway shoulder when there is no other alternate route -
This is not all stretches by any means. Look for the sign: "Bicycles
and Pedestrians Prohibited." If this sign isn't there, one should be
able to ride the freeway shoulder. Jim & I ride the stretch of I-80
between the Ophir Road and Old Town Auburn on a regular basis. That
shoulder is about 20 feet wide & is amazingly safe. still it's weird
to ride a freeway shoulder! (Note: the Auburn off-ramp is dicey for
bikes.)

South of Santa Barbara there is also a stretch where the old Highway 1 disappears. For a stretch (5 miles?) cyclists are allowed on Highway 101. Club rides ...
