Hi Losers!

Just a quick update from your coaches.
Last night we discussed "eating out" and your homework is to continue
on that subject by looking up online the nutrition facts of at least
one restuarant. When you find this information we want you to send it
to us, either by posting it here on the BL yahoo group or by emailing
us. Then we want you to do a "sort-of" experiment when you go out to
eat somewhere. We want you to see how you can make a healthy meal at
a restuarant by asking the server for substitutes, things on the side
or dishes to be prepared in a healthier manner (no salt or oil added
for example) have fun with this and see how healthy you can be while
dining out...it isn't as intimidating as it seems! Be ready to share
your experiences next week!
The handout from last night will be available on our website after
tonight, along with lots of other good resources and references.
Go to www.PowerMyHealth.com and check out the new Biggest Loser
stuff!!

Also- we forgot to mention that tomorrow nights workout is going to
be the YOGA session that we promised at the beginning of the
competition. This is a GREAT opportunity to see what YOGA is all
about. Cathleen Calkins is an incredible teacher and works with
people of all ability levels. So this will be a great experience for
you all and we really think you will enjoy it!

Again congrats to everyone for an outstanding February we are proud
of you all!!! 577 pounds, we are only 23 pounds from that half of a
Toyota we wanted to lose!!
Let's make these last 4 weeks great by staying motivated, learning
and having fun!

We've had a few of you ask already about the next Biggest Loser. While
the details aren't out yet, the best thing to do is go to our site
(power my health.com) and go the the Biggest Loser page. From there,
click the link to info about the next biggest loser, and sign up on
that email list. After this edition of BL is over, we'll send out
information there first, so by getting on that list you won't have to
worry about missing the news!

I just got a call from Stargazers. The swimming classes are on.
Please be sure to stop by and pay your fees by Monday. Don't wait
until the last minute because the class will be cancelled. If anyone
else is interested, there is still plenty of room in the 5:30 PM
class.

Thank you :-)

I have the flyers for the Water Exercise Classes that are being
offered at Stargazers. The evening class has been cut down to 4 weeks
(about what is left in our Loser session) and only costs $50. There is
also a list of the other classes and times available. It is a great
way to get in shape without all the stress on your joints.

In order to start the 3/6 class at 5:30 PM I need one more person to
sign up and all registrations must be paid prior to that date.

If anyone is interested let me know and I can either give you a flyer
and sign up sheet on Wednesday or I can email them both to you.

Best Wishes for the coming month,

California, Big Bear - Walk MS 2008

Big Bear's Biggest Loser

Help Our Team in the Fight Against MS!
The number of people living with multiple sclerosis increases every
hour of every day. This astonishing rate is not going to slow down,
let alone stop, until we've found a cure. Research has made some
incredible advances recently, but the world can still only offer
disease management drugs and therapies to the 400,000 people living
with MS in America.
We've formed a team for the MS Walk because the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society funds more MS research than any other private
organization. In addition to supporting studies which hope to reveal
the cause and course of the disease, the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society also provides much needed education, programs, and services
to everyone who is affected by MS - including the diagnosed, their
friends and families, and the healthcare professionals who work with
them.
Join our team as a walker or a volunteer! Make a donation online!
Send in a check! There are so many ways to make a difference in the
fight against MS, and it all begins right here.

Hello Losers

Sorry if you couldn't make it to the workout tonight due to the
inclement weather (again!)
If you did join us and feel the burn, enjoy those sore abs and arms!!

UPDATE: Red team won the weigh in on Monday night with 42.8 lbs lost!

The tracking for this week is emotional eating and stress...use it
like a journaling project. Keep a small notebook with you during the
day and write down what you are feeling when you are eating...bored,
sad, hunger, anger, confusion....you get the idea...we just want you
to pay attention to what your feelings are in association with food.
You are not supposed to feel anything in particular, we just want you
to be aware of your "feelings" a little more this week!

Have a great rest of the week and we will see you on Monday!

Serves 4 ~ 30 minutes or fewer preperation

1 1/2 cups packed fresh basil leaves
1 1/2 tbs grated parmesan cheese
1 1/2 tbs olive oil
1 clove garlic, minced (about 1 tsp)
3 tbs nonfat plain yogurt
4 english muffins, split
1 large ripe tomato, thinly sliced

DIRECTIONS:
1) Blend basil, parmesan chees, olive oil and garlic in food
processor or blender until well combined. Add yogurt, and precess
until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

2) Preheat broiler. Place muffins on baking sheet. Broil 1 to 2
minutes, or until lightly toasted. Spread each half with basil
mixture, and top with several tomato slices. Broil 1 to 2 minutes, or
until heated through.

Per serving: 203 calories; 7g protein; 7g total fat (1g saturated
fat); 29g carb; 2 mg chol; 354mg sod; 2g fiber; 3g sugars

The per serving caloric intake can be healthier depending on the
ingredients you decide to use. I do not use salt or pepper in my
recipe and it still tastes great.

I think this is one of the best recipes I have because it has each of
the food groups that I look for (fiber, protien, vegetable). Also
this meal is light and easy to cook. It has a great taste as well.
What more could I ask for. I try to do as little preparation for my
food as possible so that it maintains most of its natural nutrients.

Hope everyone had a great weigh-in and look forward to seeing you on
Wednesday.

Walk on sunday

Posted by: "Ted Devito" ted.devito@...   activebigbear

Fri Feb 15, 2008 1:47 pm (PST)

Has anyone told you yet today, “you’re doing a great job!” ??? Heather and I
keep coming home and talking about how we’re so impressed that you’re doing
all this stuff on your own, outside of what we do as a group. Let me tell
you, that is exactly what it takes! It’s the only way to make a change! YOU
HAVE TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR LIFE, YOUR BODY, AND YOUR WELL-BEING! And
it’s good to see you’re doing that. YOU’RE DOING A GREAT JOB!!!

Please let me know if you’d like to walk on Sunday. We’re going to meet
outside the Gym at 10:30am and stay off icy roads as much as possible.
Again, it will only be me. Heather is actually going to work and make us
some money. But for those that join, we’ll go for about 45 minutes at a
brisk walk.

Are you counting your calories? Found out yesterday that I had 670 calories
at breakfast. I was a bit surprised, but glad in the end because then I went
and burned off some 1,000 calories running.

Heather and I have our recipes ready for Monday. Do you?

Oops. I double-booked on Sunday and won’t be able to go at 10:30 because I’m
working with the “Start with a Week” team. I’ll see if I can go earlier, but
it’s likely I’ll have to miss on Sunday.

Sorry about that! Don’t let me not being there stop you from going! Anybody
who wants to go, get organized and make it happen!

"Start with a Week" focused program

Posted by: "Ted Devito" ted.devito@...   activebigbear

Fri Feb 15, 2008 5:18 pm (PST)

Hey guys,

I'm really sorry about that walk. I spaced-out on the Start with a
Week program that we're doing all next week.

Right now, there's only 2 people on the Start with a Week team. I
like to do it with 4-5 people because that's the best number for
working together closely, and that means there's a few spots left
open. It's not limited to Biggest Loser contestants, so if you know
anyone who is looking to lose some weight and is having trouble on
their own, maybe this one-week intensive is a good option for them.

The program costs $99 and we spend a lot of time together to make
sure it's a success for everybody. I think it's a killer value
because of the fast results and everything you learn, and you could
normally spend a few hundred dollars working 1-on-1 with a coach to
get the same education and weight loss. We have many people who do it
lose 4-5 pounds in the week. You guys have been losing weight for a
while already, so 2-3 pounds may be more realistic if you think about
if for yourself.

Here's the rough schedule for the week, and also what you'll need to
be available for if you're considering participating:
The time on Sunday is 10:30 to about 1:00. You don't need to bring
anything. It will take a few hours of time available during the week
to do your "cooking" requirements, plus you'll need to commit time to
exercise each day. We'll talk each day briefly (this time is flexible
and won't get in the way of your other commitments). And we'll have
another small-group meeting next weekend to weigh-in again and wrap
up.

I need to make sure I have enough materials for everyone, so please
call me tonight or tomorrow and let me know if you or someone you
know wants to join.

Thanks all, and have a great weekend!

Oops. I double-booked on Sunday and won’t be able to go at 10:30 because I’m working with the “Start with a Week” team. I’ll see if I can go earlier, but it’s likely I’ll have to miss on Sunday.

Sorry about that! Don’t let me not being there stop you from going! Anybody who wants to go, get organized and make it happen!

Has anyone told you yet today, “you’re doing a great job!” ??? Heather and I keep coming home and talking about how we’re so impressed that you’re doing all this stuff on your own, outside of what we do as a group. Let me tell you, that is exactly what it takes! It’s the only way to make a change! YOU HAVE TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR LIFE, YOUR BODY, AND YOUR WELL-BEING! And it’s good to see you’re doing that. YOU’RE DOING A GREAT JOB!!!

Please let me know if you’d like to walk on Sunday. We’re going to meet outside the Gym at 10:30am and stay off icy roads as much as possible. Again, it will only be me. Heather is actually going to work and make us some money. But for those that join, we’ll go for about 45 minutes at a brisk walk.

Are you counting your calories? Found out yesterday that I had 670 calories at breakfast. I was a bit surprised, but glad in the end because then I went and burned off some 1,000 calories running.

Heather and I have our recipes ready for Monday. Do you?

Congrats to the Blue TEAM for win #2 with the higher percentage of
weight loss and total weight lost this week!

Week #6 Results
Blue Team- 21.1 lbs 0.66% (17 weighed in)
Red Team- 13.4 lbs 0.40% (16 weighed in)

Tonight's lesson was all about calories, how much you should be taking
in and how much you need to be spending to lose weight. So your
homework is to track your calories for 3 days in the next week. They
can be any 3 days and do not have to be in row. Write everything down
that you eat so you can see about how many calories you are consuming
in a day.
Use the resource links on our website (www.powermyhealth.com) to find
calorie calculators, counters, expenditure charts, etc. And yes the
site is functional, just the front homepage is under construction this
week!

The second assignment for the week is to find a healthy recipe that you
will be able to:
1) type it up or photocopy and bring in (no handwritten please)
2) state why you think it is healthy
3) have cooked it at least once and can report on the results.

It doesn't have to be fancy or complex and can be very simple. There
are many resouces online to find healthy recipes or again you are
welcome to come into our office and borrow our reference books.

Have a great week and we will see you Wednesday!

I truly think it is amazing that America can be shocked that we are
overweight when America is about HUGE servings. As I have monitored
and read the labels and ate according to the packages, I have
realized the reason for my extra weight. I have also been talking to
my husband who is currently in a hospital. He tells me he can't wait
to come home because they do not serve fresh vegetables or fruit, or
anything fresh for that matter. When I think back to going to school
I remember the same.

I am very glad I got the opportunity to participate in this program.
Thank you to the Big Bear's Biggest Loser I finally know how to eat
right and live healthy. If our children do not grow up with these
concepts (like is true for me), how will they ever know any
different.

I have been monitoring my portions since the beginning of the
program and I notice a huge difference on how fast I get full. My
stomach has shrank suprisingly fast, not that I have lost the
weight, but I tend to constantly have left overs after a meal.
Although I have not been able to exercise and my muscles are no
longer as firm as the were a couple of weeks ago, I still feel
confident that my life is taking a turn for the better.

Look forward to seeing you all at tonight's weigh-in.

Pass The Butter, please! . This is interesting. . .

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people ! to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW.. the difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few
only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..

Very high in trans fatty acids.

Triple risk of coronary heart disease
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic Would you! melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to "butter them up")!

Chinese Proverb:
"When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others.

So..., DO IT !

Congrats Blue team for winning last nights weigh in and congrats to our
monthy winners Bob and Rebekah! Keep up the great work!

Your assignment this week is to really look at portion sizes / serving
sizes on the foods that you are eating. For every food that has a label
get out your measuring tools (scales, measuring cups, tablespoons, etc)
and measure the correct portion size according to the label. If your
food doesn't have a label then you can go online to
http://www.NutritionData.com and check out their refernce guide to get
an idea what a real serving size of that food is. When you are tracking
this week, write down what surprises you and what you learn from
measuring out your portion sizes!

Have a great week and we will see you Wednesday!
