Plus the lack of social life is really killing me. My friends won't see me and I fear at work I will infect the office. But so far I have not given it to anyone.
The stigma to bed bugs is dirt and poverty. Really tired of feeling like a 2nd class citizen.
I hope Bloomberg gets it in his 79th Street townhouse. Then NYC will wake up to this costly epidemic.
Sorry folks, just had to vent. I am so sick of all this. Why us? Is there a silver lining in all this that none of us see yet?
Thanks for listening.

Nilda,

I think there is a particular pyschological phenomenon with Bed Bugs that doesnt necessarrily happen with other pests. For me the psychological impact was the worst part. I was under unusual stress at the time that I had them and it was just the straw that broke the camels back. I was at my wits end.

I think that there are 4 things that might help you calm yourself:

1) Know that they can be sucessfully eradicated and this wont last forever. It took me a few months and a lot of work but I got rid of them. During the episode however, I truely believed I would never be bed bug free and this attitude did not help my mental state of mind .

2) They are disguisting but they arent going to cause you any real physical harm. They arent vectors for disease or poisenous. You have to tell yourself that "I am beyond grossed out. They give me the heebie geebies but they really arent going to hurt me." My boys were having allergic reactions and in a way it was harmful for them. But it's not like we had a house infested with scorpions or vipers. Once I moved the boys from their beds and they stopped getting bit, their suffering and my anxiety decreased. I had to tell myself that these bugs werent worth getting completely worked up over becuase in the end they are just bugs.

3) Talk about it but dont let it be the only thing you talk or think about, otherwise it is all you will allow your mind to process and you will be in a perpetual high state of anxiety. You have to distract your mind to other topics and carry on with your normal life.

4) Go stay over at your moms for a night so you can catch up on sleep. Lack of sleep will make anyone emotional. And dont stop eating! You need to keep your body healthy.

Good luck Nilda, I know this sucks for you!

Ok after my first post yesterday of seeing the 1 on my sock, I went home and started to really really clean. I found 2 dead ones and 1 live 1 !!!!! SO of course I couldnt eat, sleep, or even think of anything but them creatures from outer space. I called the PCO and he is coming again today. The population is not big anymore but I just want to not see them anymore and be at peace. I want to relax in my own bed. I just cant. I broke down and started crying and praying and my husband just though I was ridiculous offering me to take me to my moms. I mean even seeing a piece of lint makes me think its one of them. How can I learn to relax and not think of them? I feel like a mental patient!

OMG Jenny! You made me laugh so much when you said its not like your house was
infested with scorpions or vipors. hehhehehe I needed that laugh and kinda made
me think differently. I know they cant harm me but its just the thought of bugs
crawling on my while Im sleeping that does me in. But I was fine for 2 weeks
because I didnt see a thing but after yesterday I went right back to the mental
patient status. lol
I actually did stay at my moms for 2 weeks while my husband was eaten alive by
them. I wish I has his mental state because nothing phases him. I was much much
worst when I found out I had them. Thats when I actually left for 2 weeks. But
thanks for the advice. I will try to think that way. 1 day I will sit back and
just laugh at how silly I was about it. But right now just check me in at
freinds hospital lol.

The Ortho spray only kills on contact. It has no residual effect on the BB's.

I'm self-treating too. Women easily freak out (wait! what was that? something
moved behind me?) I gladly took my mission:

Colonel Lucas: Your report specifies intelligence, counter-intelligence, with
ComSec I-Corps.
Willard: I'm not presently disposed to discuss these operations, sir.
Colonel Lucas: Did you not work for the CIA in I-Corps? (bedbug op)
Willard: No, sir.
Colonel Lucas: Did you not assassinate a bed bug government tax collector in
Quang Tri province, June 19th, 1968?... Captain?
Willard: Sir, I am unaware of any such activity or operation - nor would I be
disposed to discuss such an operation if it did in fact exist, sir.

Colonel Lucas: Your mission is to proceed up the Nung River in a Navy patrol
boat. Pick up Colonel Kurtz's path at Nu Mung Ba, follow it and learn what you
can along the way (where the bedbugs are hiding.) When you find the Colonel,
infiltrate his team by whatever means available and terminate the (bedbugs
command ctr )Colonel's command.
Willard: Terminate the Colonel?
General Corman: He's out there operating without any decent restraint, totally
beyond the pale of any acceptable human conduct. And he is still in the field
commanding troops.
Civilian: Terminate with extreme prejudice.
Colonel Lucas: You understand Captain that this mission does not exist, nor will
it ever exist.

"Kilgore: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
[kneels]
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a
hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one
of 'em, not one stinkin' (bed bug) dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline
smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end..."
[Kilgore unhappily walks off]

Zack Johnson: [radio announcer] And now here's another blast from the past

My circumstance was far different than most. I had moved out of a heavily
infested rental unit and into a new apartment. I had very little furnitings and
no clutter to deal with so when I discovered I had brought some bugs with me, I
decided to attempt to self treat. If the results were not positive I would have
definately stopped and called in a professional exterminator.

Home Depot store. I had tried several different spays that had differant levels
of lamda-Bifenthrin concentations. I ended up using the Beyer Advanced since it
had the highest level. It listed bed bugs as an insect to use it on, on the
inside label. That seemed to help a great deal. I would spray the bedframe
(after removeing the box spring and mattress), the perimeter of my bedroom,
living room, stairway and kitchen on a weekly basis for about a month then every
two weeks thereafter. My infestation was a light one, my apartment is a small
lofted studio unit and I caught them early so self spaying may or may not work
out for you. I hope it does. For me, it took about 4 months before they were
finally gone. I also found that its residual effect took care of other insects.

something that just may help my situation. Thought that I'd make a post because
maybe some of you will find this helpfull also. I found a post regarding a bug
spray called Ortho Home Defense Max and it seems that this stuff kills on
contact. This spray does not indicate that it will kill bed bugs but it seems to
be working very well for the person that made the post. I was so excited about
what I was reading that I ran out and bought some. I sprayed a perimater around
my son's room and in the shelving unit that he has built in his wall, I also
sprayed all the molding. In the post that I was reading it said that if any of
the little buggers try to cross the perimater barrier that I sprayed they'll
die. Ooooooooh I hope this works I have renewed hope, didn't think that was
possible. I'm not to sure how often I'm supposed to spray this stuff exactly but
I'm going to do a perimater

next 7 days then once every 7 days and after about a month of that every 14
days. I don't think that it'll be a right away fix but in a few months of being
vigilent and consistant with spraying I'm hoping for some good results. I also
know that I won't succeed in my fight against them if I don't clean, scrub, and
wash everything in my house. Ooooooh I hope, I hope it works. I thought that I'd
share the name of the product with you all. Maybe if it works for me it may work
for someone else to. Oh and I only paid $20.00 bucks for it to that's a whole
lot better then the $1500.00 dollars that the exterminaters where quoting me.

Hot showers soothe my bites. About a month ago I was staying under hot streams
of water like it was a spiritual Winter Heat bath. I'd groan, have an O and
forget what time it was (Yes! the pain was that bad and yes hot water soothed it
for me.)

Then I read we have to hydrate not take hot showers. So hydrate, that's an
order soldier! Use coco butter, aloe vera or one of those expensive
ones-Eurithecin?)

I'm very allergic to bites. Just one bed bug making a few bites
can and will turn into an allergic reaction. I feel like I have to scratch off
my skin. My ex-girlfriend (women, they take care of ya!)
gave me a super potency Clobetasol Propionate 0.05%.

That got rid of all my original itchings and my allergic reaction/bite
areas got reduced 50% & more. It took awhile but the itching immediatly stopped
(the itching would come back in an hour or more. At that time I might hydrate
or use a cheaper medicine.)
There still are many purple marks.

First my butt (from my computer chair) and then the sides of my thighs
got affected (from my calf to thigh/hip.) Time passed and I got a few more
bites on both sides of my belly. Now either I got bit more or there's an
allergic reaction.

My ankles were also fairly new in being bitten. Both are still very "hot" and
itchy as well as the tops of my feet. I've only used teh expensive medicine on
my belly and ankles a few times. I might continue to get rid of this allergic
reaction.

It's an expensive medicine $70 that was bought for $7.

feet, on my face, around my fingernail beds and on the tips of my fingers --
really all over my hands -- making it difficult and painful to bend my

the OTC anti-itch creams aren't working maybe ask your GP for a RX cream or

I feel like scratching my skin off, but im sure that wouldnt be good. Also, I

Looking at this list below from Bennett, I suppose the bugs may have bitten me
elsewhere and I never knew. I think that even the immature "instars" bites feel
like a red hot pin, because I actually saw one on my leg turning pink at my
expense, and feeling like a hot pin.

alcohol through one's skin, but for me it was a trade off. I like DEAD bed bugs.

Don't know but I still have purple marks from August. Whenever I get
bitten, I have a severe reaction. Just a few bites WILL become an annoying
allergic reaction into many bumps.

Every piece of lint I see could be a potential Bedbug. The enemy is very
cunning...

want to inhale that stuff...I've been procrastinating on getting that.
The Chair-I took that apart in the bathtub, then doused it with 4 bottles of
alcohol.

A day later I redoused it with 7 bottles of alcohol. I don't think any bedbugs
could have survived. I ripped up as much fabric as I could. The only other
thing I could of done was to permanently ripped
apart the back support. But I figured if the chair was soaking in alcohol, that
would be enough.

De-I don't know, with my luck I'd breath in a gallon of that stuff.
Maybe when I find out who sells it in my area. I read that it's like little
pieces of glass that rips your lungs.

Pillows are encased but not yet the boxspring. I just rechecked that tonight.
Btw the men at the Alamo celebrated for a few days. Then a few bedbugs were
spotted...I got a few more bites recently.

Anything that is wood, metal or plastic can be sprayed with Murphy's, making

the excess. I treated a very troublesome oak bunk bed frame this way & never had
problems with bbs in it again.

rob...its good to know that you did succeed in getting rid of your bedbugs...bottom line is that you got rid of them...When I had bedbugs I told a woman who colored my hair and she put me in touch with a friend of hers  who had them and he got rid of them on his own... I called him and he offered to help me but I declined and hired a PCO....in any situtation , imo, its always best to leave it up to the experts, but in these difficult economic times some people really cannot afford to hire a PCO...so it's good to hear from people like you who did succeed on their own...

It's really up to you, but if you sold the house and you tell them NOW that you had bedbugs, they could make you pay to exterminate them if they take you to court. They'll say you knew about them and did not disclose.

No I did not. I never knew that I even had them until I started to unpack. Then I started inspecting and saw them on the bed frames and mattress :( It just sucks that I brought them to my new place. I have such anxiety and its so unsettling to think that I cant relax and enjoy my place of refuge. All my furniture is new and I have enclosed my new mattress and pillows with those protectors but I still cant just relax. Why do these things exist? I hate them!!!!

Question:
After that spray that they drench the floor with drys, does it still keep killing?

Before I moved I had a flea problem. I had purchased that Ortho spray and brang
it with me to the new place (not even knowing about the bed bugs). The first
time I saw the critter was during unpacking. I was unpacking my pillows and
there it was. I never seen it before and though it was a dead flat roach. Boy
was I wrong. I just flicked it off with the dead flat roach ussumption. That
night....OMG! Thats when I saw them running for their lives on the floor getting
into everything I brought! I threw everything out and just started spraying them
with the ortho stuff and it kills on contact but I eventually hired an
exterminator because I just kept seeing them everywhere (after all they where
moving too...they were looking for new placed to hide) I cant believe I never
seen them in the house I lived in! NEVER! But yet they came out like craziess on
moving day. It was not the joyeous experiance I was looking forward too. Im not
sure of the residual effects of the Ortho becuase I kept seeing them. Ive only
seen a few straglers after the extermination and as I mentioned that 1 on my
sock today! I wanted to scream to the 4 winds but I just kept my cool, killed
it, and trashed the socks. Then I went to work imagining I had been bitten but I
wasnt. I do reccomend proffesional help for peace of mind. Tackling them
yourself takes alot. Although you still have to be consistant with the cleaning
after extermination. I have actually put double sided sticky tape on everything
I bought new, bed, sofa, dresser...EVERYthing and I havent seen them caught on
it so I guess its a good sign? Well anyway....Im glad I can talk about this here
because you cant just say to your coworker, "Hey I have bed bugs, lets talk."
lol

You're not the only crazy one. Did you notify the people who bought your house? You could have left some behind.

Thanks guys! This whole experiance has taken such a toll on my and of course my husband thinks Im insane! The story is I just sold my house and moved to an apartment with my husband. Upon taking the mattress and bed frame to the new place they decided to show themselves. I didnt even know I had them! I always attributed the bites to fleas (I had a cat) or mosquitos but NEVER BED BUGS! NOT ME! lol. ALmost everday I had bites but never paid attention to them. So these vampires spread out through my whole apartment. I threw out everything I owned and got an exterminator. I was so stressed out! Couldnt eat or sleep and all I though about was them. Mean while my husband was sound asleep! I was so happy about my move then they just rained on my parade and gave me such big depression. I started feeling better after the initial extermination because I saw many dead ones and felt, "Ok its working." But after seeing the one this morning (2nd extermination was done saturday) I just wanted to cry and be crazy all over again. But from what you guys are saying that its normal to see them after then Im going to try and relax and stop trying to not think of them. Am I the only crazy one? Sheesh! And they are so little? How can something so small consume me?

Yes, I would agree.
In fact, other bugs would emerge too in my home after exterminations.
It completely freaked me out - like how can this happen after all these chemicals?!!
But it is a good thing even though it is totally gross and unnerving.

Hi,
We had success after 3 treatments. After each treatment we saw bugs. Actually this is pretty much the only time we ever saw them. The chemicals, if applied properly, force them out of their hiding spots and they come out to get away. This is actually a good thing. You want to them to walk through the poison and die. Good luck!

Betty, I had to go to a psychologist too! You arent crazy, your situation is.

Have you considered legal recourse against your neighbors? Maybe even just the threat of a civil suite will put them into action? NYS also has tenant laws that make your landlord responsible for fixing the problem.

Call me if you ever need to talk (or sob) with someone who has been there, lost thier mind and then recovered it.

A couple of you have beeen wonderfully supportive and I truly don't know what I would have done without you.  The latest scenerio is I'm getting bitten, and the only way I can explain how they're getting to me is they're somewhere in the bed.  We've encased, have interceptors, even went to sleep wearing lavender lotion (heard on bedbugger that works) problem was the ony place I didn't soak myself in it I got bit four times. As many of you know I'm going on two years with this due to living in an adjoined house that won't treat because of the money. We had a four month repreive.  Heavenly but never trusted it.  The only place I've found bugs is on the bottom, sides and on top of the box springs.  There literally is nothing else in my room.  Anyway my nerves have become so bad again, I feel sick all the time.  It's a house so I can't just move.  Learning to live with this is hell.  I'm going to a place called Payne Whitney in NY that deals with specific anxiety disorders which I've developed during this time.  It's an excellant and reputable place - affiliated with New York Weill Cornell.  I need so much mental help before I go over the deep end.  My husband thinks I'm crazy and he yells at me.  I need all of you to hold my hand.  Here come the tears, again.

I had never tried the Otho product. I did use a product called Beyer Advance
which contained .05% lambda-Bifenthrin that I had gotten at the local Home Depot
store. I had tried several different spays that had differant levels of
lamda-Bifenthrin concentations.
I discovered I had a small flea infestation as well(the prior resident of the
unit had cats). So far I am comimg up onto the four month mark without a bite,
knock wood.

Please make sure you are wearing a protective breathing mask while spraying and
wash any clothing you wear and shower after spraying. The insecticide spray
effects the insects nervous system and over time with continued exposure you may
start feeling ill effects from it as well.

sprayed all the molding. In the post that I was reading it said that if any of
the little buggers try to cross the perimater barrier that I sprayed they'll
die. Ooooooooh I hope this works I have renewed hope, didn't think that was
possible. I'm not to sure how often I'm supposed to spray this stuff exactly but
I'm going to do a perimater spray once a day as well as the shelving unit. I'm
going to do that for the next 7 days then once every 7 days and after about a
month of that every 14 days. I don't think that it'll be a right away fix but in
a few months of being vigilent and consistant with spraying I'm hoping for some
good results. I also know that I won't succeed in my fight against them if I
don't clean, scrub, and wash everything in my house. Ooooooh I hope, I hope it
works. I thought that I'd share the name of the product with you all. Maybe if
it works for me it may work for someone else to. Oh and I only paid $20.00 bucks
for it to that's a whole lot better then the $1500.00 dollars that the
exterminaters where quoting me.

I went to an allergist who prescribe a double dose of Rx antihistamine (went through several before finding one that worked) plus i used a topical steroid cream in addition to 2 courses of prednisone. My bites would swell to 6 inches in diameter (on my arms and legs) plus i was getting bites on the bottoms of my feet, on my face, around my fingernail beds and on the tips of my fingers -- really all over my hands -- making it difficult and painful to bend my fingers. A hot shower always made it worse. try a tempid shower instead. If the OTC anti-itch creams aren't working maybe ask your GP for a RX cream or antihistamine.

I seem to be having an allergic reation to my bites....they burn and swell!!!! I feel like scratching my skin off, but im sure that wouldnt be good. Also, I find that when I take a hot shower, all bites that I may not have known existed, appear.

Betty --- Hang in there! you can do this. BB make us feel like we have no control and zap us of our energy with the sleep deprivation. I understand the anxierty. Thinking of them in the bed just grosses me out and puts me on edge. Knowing my kids were getting bite made me a luanatic. When is your appointment at Payne Whittney? Here is thing we have the control. Is there anything you guys haven't tried? Can't remember do you have vaseline on the bed legs and interceptor cups? If not get some and slather it all over with a "ah ha! bedbugs I will win this battle!"  Have you caulked moldings, etc? If not start caulking with a "take that BB I will win this battle! stay with those rotten neighbors who wont treat!" You are in the brooklyn right? I am pretty sure there is a bed bug advisory board in NYC now, call them, see if there is anything they can do to help you with the unresponsive neighbors. you will win this fight!!  --Jessica

schmidt --

so I read the thread on BB.com b/c this sounds just too good to be true and if it is true IMO we all would have done it, the product would be advertised for BB use, etc. Anyhow I think you should re-read the thread. It seems the information is mixed and the original question about using this product was a hypothetical one.  A few people agree it kills on contact but not very well as a perimeter treatment (which is what you are planning on doing). Also most of the people used it in conjunction with a PCO. Please be extremely cautious. I don't want to "burst your bubble" but there is no easy fix for BB. Believe me I wish there were a quick easy fix. I also don't want you to harm yourself or others by using the product incorrectly. Do you have pets? I'm not sure if this will harm your pets.

IMO it is better to work with a PCO who is highly recommended for BB treatment. If you are worried about the financial implications maybe they have a payment plan or something. Giving the economic climate right now it would be worth asking. Maybe you can borrow some $$ from a family member or friend. It took us weeks to get rid of bed bugs and finally we went with thermal. We are now 45 days BB free but we still live like the BB are here (washing, vacuuming, bagging, etc).

If you are going to self treat please do more research. IMO purchase a respirator (like the gas mask type) and be extremely careful. You probably also want to look into using DE.

maybe some of you will find this helpfull also.
In the post that I was reading it said that if any of
the little buggers try to cross the perimater barrier that I sprayed they'll
die. Ooooooooh I hope this works I have renewed hope, didn't think that was
possible. I'm not to sure how often I'm supposed to spray this stuff exactly but
I'm going to do a perimater spray once a day as well as the shelving unit. I'm
going to do that for the next 7 days then once every 7 days and after about a
month of that every 14 days.
