Before I moved I had a flea problem. I had purchased that Ortho spray and brang
it with me to the new place (not even knowing about the bed bugs). The first
time I saw the critter was during unpacking. I was unpacking my pillows and
there it was. I never seen it before and though it was a dead flat roach. Boy
was I wrong. I just flicked it off with the dead flat roach ussumption. That
night....OMG! Thats when I saw them running for their lives on the floor getting
into everything I brought! I threw everything out and just started spraying them
with the ortho stuff and it kills on contact but I eventually hired an
exterminator because I just kept seeing them everywhere (after all they where
moving too...they were looking for new placed to hide) I cant believe I never
seen them in the house I lived in! NEVER! But yet they came out like craziess on
moving day. It was not the joyeous experiance I was looking forward too. Im not
sure of the residual effects of the Ortho becuase I kept seeing them. Ive only
seen a few straglers after the extermination and as I mentioned that 1 on my
sock today! I wanted to scream to the 4 winds but I just kept my cool, killed
it, and trashed the socks. Then I went to work imagining I had been bitten but I
wasnt. I do reccomend proffesional help for peace of mind. Tackling them
yourself takes alot. Although you still have to be consistant with the cleaning
after extermination. I have actually put double sided sticky tape on everything
I bought new, bed, sofa, dresser...EVERYthing and I havent seen them caught on
it so I guess its a good sign? Well anyway....Im glad I can talk about this here
because you cant just say to your coworker, "Hey I have bed bugs, lets talk."
lol

I wanted to clarify that I am in no way suggesting anyone self treat. My
circumstance was far different than most. I had moved out of a heavily infested
rental unit and into a new apartment. I had very little furnitings and no
clutter to deal with so when I discovered I had brought some bugs with me, I
decided to attempt to self treat. If the results were not positive I would have
definately stopped and called in a professional exterminator.

lofted studio unit and I caught them early so self spaying may or may not work
out for you. I hope it does. For me, it took about 4 months before they were
finally gone. I also found that its residual effect took care of other insects.
I discovered I had a small flea infestation as well(the prior resident of the
unit had cats). So far I am comimg up onto the four month mark without a bite,
knock wood.

Thanks guys! This whole experiance has taken such a toll on my and of course my husband thinks Im insane! The story is I just sold my house and moved to an apartment with my husband. Upon taking the mattress and bed frame to the new place they decided to show themselves. I didnt even know I had them! I always attributed the bites to fleas (I had a cat) or mosquitos but NEVER BED BUGS! NOT ME! lol. ALmost everday I had bites but never paid attention to them. So these vampires spread out through my whole apartment. I threw out everything I owned and got an exterminator. I was so stressed out! Couldnt eat or sleep and all I though about was them. Mean while my husband was sound asleep! I was so happy about my move then they just rained on my parade and gave me such big depression. I started feeling better after the initial extermination because I saw many dead ones and felt, "Ok its working." But after seeing the one this morning (2nd extermination was done saturday) I just wanted to cry and be crazy all over again. But from what you guys are saying that its normal to see them after then Im going to try and relax and stop trying to not think of them. Am I the only crazy one? Sheesh! And they are so little? How can something so small consume me?

Yes, I would agree.
In fact, other bugs would emerge too in my home after exterminations.
It completely freaked me out - like how can this happen after all these chemicals?!!
But it is a good thing even though it is totally gross and unnerving.

Hi,
We had success after 3 treatments. After each treatment we saw bugs. Actually this is pretty much the only time we ever saw them. The chemicals, if applied properly, force them out of their hiding spots and they come out to get away. This is actually a good thing. You want to them to walk through the poison and die. Good luck!

Betty, I had to go to a psychologist too! You arent crazy, your situation is.

Have you considered legal recourse against your neighbors? Maybe even just the threat of a civil suite will put them into action? NYS also has tenant laws that make your landlord responsible for fixing the problem.

Call me if you ever need to talk (or sob) with someone who has been there, lost thier mind and then recovered it.

A couple of you have beeen wonderfully supportive and I truly don't know what I would have done without you.  The latest scenerio is I'm getting bitten, and the only way I can explain how they're getting to me is they're somewhere in the bed.  We've encased, have interceptors, even went to sleep wearing lavender lotion (heard on bedbugger that works) problem was the ony place I didn't soak myself in it I got bit four times. As many of you know I'm going on two years with this due to living in an adjoined house that won't treat because of the money. We had a four month repreive.  Heavenly but never trusted it.  The only place I've found bugs is on the bottom, sides and on top of the box springs.  There literally is nothing else in my room.  Anyway my nerves have become so bad again, I feel sick all the time.  It's a house so I can't just move.  Learning to live with this is hell.  I'm going to a place called Payne Whitney in NY that deals with specific anxiety disorders which I've developed during this time.  It's an excellant and reputable place - affiliated with New York Weill Cornell.  I need so much mental help before I go over the deep end.  My husband thinks I'm crazy and he yells at me.  I need all of you to hold my hand.  Here come the tears, again.

I went to an allergist who prescribe a double dose of Rx antihistamine (went through several before finding one that worked) plus i used a topical steroid cream in addition to 2 courses of prednisone. My bites would swell to 6 inches in diameter (on my arms and legs) plus i was getting bites on the bottoms of my feet, on my face, around my fingernail beds and on the tips of my fingers -- really all over my hands -- making it difficult and painful to bend my fingers. A hot shower always made it worse. try a tempid shower instead. If the OTC anti-itch creams aren't working maybe ask your GP for a RX cream or antihistamine.

I could always locate my bites after a hot shower in the morning...for some reason the bites became more pronounced after the shower...I would suggest some kind of over the counter creme to stop itching..

I seem to be having an allergic reation to my bites....they burn and swell!!!! I feel like scratching my skin off, but im sure that wouldnt be good. Also, I find that when I take a hot shower, all bites that I may not have known existed, appear.

Betty --- Hang in there! you can do this. BB make us feel like we have no control and zap us of our energy with the sleep deprivation. I understand the anxierty. Thinking of them in the bed just grosses me out and puts me on edge. Knowing my kids were getting bite made me a luanatic. When is your appointment at Payne Whittney? Here is thing we have the control. Is there anything you guys haven't tried? Can't remember do you have vaseline on the bed legs and interceptor cups? If not get some and slather it all over with a "ah ha! bedbugs I will win this battle!"  Have you caulked moldings, etc? If not start caulking with a "take that BB I will win this battle! stay with those rotten neighbors who wont treat!" You are in the brooklyn right? I am pretty sure there is a bed bug advisory board in NYC now, call them, see if there is anything they can do to help you with the unresponsive neighbors. you will win this fight!!  --Jessica

Here come the tears, again.

schmidt --

so I read the thread on BB.com b/c this sounds just too good to be true and if it is true IMO we all would have done it, the product would be advertised for BB use, etc. Anyhow I think you should re-read the thread. It seems the information is mixed and the original question about using this product was a hypothetical one.  A few people agree it kills on contact but not very well as a perimeter treatment (which is what you are planning on doing). Also most of the people used it in conjunction with a PCO. Please be extremely cautious. I don't want to "burst your bubble" but there is no easy fix for BB. Believe me I wish there were a quick easy fix. I also don't want you to harm yourself or others by using the product incorrectly. Do you have pets? I'm not sure if this will harm your pets.

IMO it is better to work with a PCO who is highly recommended for BB treatment. If you are worried about the financial implications maybe they have a payment plan or something. Giving the economic climate right now it would be worth asking. Maybe you can borrow some $$ from a family member or friend. It took us weeks to get rid of bed bugs and finally we went with thermal. We are now 45 days BB free but we still live like the BB are here (washing, vacuuming, bagging, etc).

If you are going to self treat please do more research. IMO purchase a respirator (like the gas mask type) and be extremely careful. You probably also want to look into using DE.

Well I made my way to the bed bugger forums tonight and I found a post on something that just may help my situation. Thought that I'd make a post because maybe some of you will find this helpfull also. I found a post regarding a bug spray called Ortho Home Defense Max and it seems that this stuff kills on contact. This spray does not indicate that it will kill bed bugs but it seems to be working very well for the person that made the post. I was so excited about what I was reading that I ran out and bought some. I sprayed a perimater around my son's room and in the shelving unit that he has built in his wall, I also sprayed all the molding. In the post that I was reading it said that if any of the little buggers try to cross the perimater barrier that I sprayed they'll die. Ooooooooh I hope this works I have renewed hope, didn't think that was possible. I'm not to sure how often I'm supposed to spray this stuff exactly but I'm going to do a perimater spray once a day as well as the shelving unit. I'm going to do that for the next 7 days then once every 7 days and after about a month of that every 14 days. I don't think that it'll be a right away fix but in a few months of being vigilent and consistant with spraying I'm hoping for some good results. I also know that I won't succeed in my fight against them if I don't clean, scrub, and wash everything in my house. Ooooooh I hope, I hope it works. I thought that I'd share the name of the product with you all. Maybe if it works for me it may work for someone else to. Oh and I only paid $20.00 bucks for it to that's a whole lot better then the $1500.00 dollars that the exterminaters where quoting me.

so sorry for your plight...bedbugs have an awful way of disrupting out lives, in the negative...you can always buy one of those aero beds...the blow up kinds...some of them raise up off the floor...you can lay a large sheet of plastic on the floor ( they sell rolls of plastic in hardware stores for painters..like a tarp....) then you can place the blow up bed on top of the plastic sheeting...to secure the plastic sheeting you can use Frost King double sided carpet tape and this way the tape presents a sticky barrier all around...its really not as hard as it sounds...you can smear some vaseline along the side of the aero bed...in any case the aero bed is easy to maintain and won't cost a lot...during the bedbug war its best to keep belongings to a minimum...I did it for nearly two years...IF there is carpet on the floor then its more difficult to tape the plastic sheeting down....its like creating a moat..deb

As we prepare to uproot our lives, and basically start from scratch, I am obviously trying to prepare the best way i can and take all necessary precautions. As far as mattresses & frames, I want to purchase your standard metal bed frame, nothing fancy at all,i think i'll feel safer and they seem to be the easiest best suited as i also want to use the ClimbUp interceptor dishes, HOWEVER, most Queen bed frames have a center leg, that's right in the middle of the bed, i don't want this. I will not be able to properly monitor the CU dish if it's in the center, without removing the mattresses unlike, the outer cups where i can see them. Does anyone know where i can possibly find such a frame?

On a lighter note , who else thinks that with all the hardship & cost associated with this creature, and like myself has to start over from scratch, thinks Bed Bug Registries aren't a bad idea? I mean wedding registries were done as a way to help a newly married couple get started weren't they? And whatever hopes my fiance and i had on starting to plan our wedding are out the door at this point.

I understand your pain. I have been dealing with bed bugs for the past three
weeks. Im covered in bites, but have only seen 3 bed bugs. I live in an
apartment building on the 9th floor, and the infestation started on the second
floor, in the apartment of someone who was grabbing furniture off the street.
Luckily, my landlord called an exterminator, but they are only spot treating and
not exterminating the entire apartment building.

I tried the tape, and never caught one. I was steaming my box spring and thats
when I saw the fecal matter, and 1 adult and 1 nymph.

I would recommend getting a bed bug proof mattress encasement and box spring
encasement. This will trap them and prevent them from getting in or out. If you
are continuing to get bit, then atleast you know they are not in your bed, but
are coming from other places.

I just ordered Bed Bug Powder, it was very inexpensive. I just got that in
today, so when I get home from work, I am going to test it out. People say it
works.....

Sara...if you can move it sounds like you would be better off....you just have to be super , super careful when you move...I moved and I got bite on my ankle the night we moved..to this day I don't know if that bite happened in my car or in the place we moved , I did transport bedbugs to the place we moved to..how I'll never know but my car could have been the culprit...bedbugs are so insidious...in any case getting a steamer...and then knowing how to properly use it, can be a good idea for the car...I would try and get a bedbug spray and spray all around , underneath the carseats...then close the car up for a day or two....and then ventilate it....keep a spray bottle of high acidic vinegar in the car to spray around your feet and ankles...I used a product called Sterifab but it ate away at my leather seats...so I don't recommend it for any leather ..if you have cloth seats then you can probably use it..Also there is a spray product calle KLEEN FREE..its an enzyme solution that kills bedbugs on contact...you can spay all around your car seats with that ...there is a lot of info online so hopefully you can do research...and in time, get rid of the monsters...deb

From everything I've read, YES, you can bring them into your car.
I am having the same issue with getting my fiance to understand this and figure out how we can deal with it. The worst part is after reading this, the exterminators my building mgmt has hired to come(i played stupid on the phone,, JUST TO SEE, the level of competency of the exterminators or if the were going the cheap route, which i presumed) I asked, what about our car, we've been in and out of that plenty and since we don't know how long we've actually had the problem, do you/can you, treat the car too? The girl on the phone, who presumably fields these calls ALL DAY, told me "Oh no, don't worry about it, just vacuum it, you'll be fine"
That's when i called my fiance and said we are moving. We cannot afford to live here any longer. On top of every other issue we are having with mold, lack of regular extermination, vermin, etc. To know that they are taking such a shitty approach to this whole thing and all other ongoing issues, i knew we would NEVER be rid of this situation if we remain.

I am still trying to figure out what to do next about the car and am freaking the hell out in the meantime.

My hair was down my back but the idea that they could be in my hair made me cut it off. i know i am doing everything possible but to know they are still in here is driving me insane. knock on wood- we went 2 weeks with no bites until this weekend and i saw three red bumps on my daughters thigh. and it just crossed my mind...can i take these into my car?????? i just was wondering if anyone else had any ideas and i needed to vent...not something u wanna talk about with all your friends....

FYI, I am still dealing with my bed bug problem...its been about 3 weeks, and at
first, my fiance was not getting biten and he was saying I was
overreacting....however...he is now getting bit and he cant take it. Im having
an allergic reaction to them, my bites swell up very large, and burn....So, just
tell you man to wait!!! They will soon get him!

section. Ask someone there for help. I've also found them at Wal-Mart and even
some supermarkets. Make sure you ask someone who works at the store because they
might be in a different place than where you're looking.

this has instantly caused and is completely consuming my life and it's only been
3 days.  My Fiance thinks i'm overreacting(he's not getting bit up, I am)and
after reading through so much online in the past couple days on how to begin
this daunting task, i have since ordered the protect a bed mattress covers & Box
spring(i honestly never knew this, and it is something that almost be
mandatory)and pillow covers as well.  Although i will want a new bed once we get
a handle on all this and if we have money left to afford it.

live in brooklyn, i am limited to where i can get with out a car and don't
really want to be around people right now.  I keep seeing references for Ziploc
but i see nothing like it in stores that are large enough for clothing and other
such things that we can't just toss out but, want to put away for the 18months
it takes to be sure they're dead.

can i find this?  After clothes are cleaned i can use the vaccum/shrink storage
bags but, where can i find XXL storage bags?

i am having the same problem with mold and lack of regular extermination as
well. forgot to mention that the management is making me partial pay for this
"bug man" to come out because it is "not normal wear and tear" according to the
letter I got on my door. And I have been dealing with this for 2 months. Just
realized that as I read the letter again. Since the first time he came out we
have been bit maybe 4 times in two months. dont know if that is a good thing or
not. just me and my daughter. she's only been bit twice. Flipped my son's bed
saturday and found about 10-15 ranging in age and no bites on him. I know people
react differently but just the amount of them I would have figured some
identifying mark would be on his body. i also found one live one on my couch and
a bunch of DEAD ones!!! threw that couch out as well. down to a loveseat and a
recliner and i have yet to get bit while sleeping on it. about the car I am
going to steam clean it this weekend and put sticky traps under the seats and
see what i get. oh well about to do my nightly vacuum and alcohol spray.

and out of that plenty and since we don't know how long we've actually had the
problem, do you/can you, treat the car too? The girl on the phone, who
presumably fields these calls ALL DAY, told me "Oh no, don't worry about it,
just vacuum it, you'll be fine"

even tried the petrollem jelly...thought about gettin the tin can and putting
water in it and sticking the bed legs in the can. then i read they will crawl up
the wall and drop down to feed. needless to say everyones bed is in the middle

as soon as i feel the self center critters are gone or i get bit!!! i am
freaking out. i wash the sheets and blankets everyday. vacuum in the morning and
at night. steam the baseboards daily and carpets 2 to 3 times a week. our
clothes are in space saver bags. the curtains and bathroom mats are in space
saver bags. i have put important documents (since they can live in paper and
books) in space saver bags as well. My hair was down my back but the idea that
they could be in my hair made me cut it off. i know i am doing everything
possible but to know they are still in here is driving me insane. knock on wood-
we went 2 weeks with no bites until this weekend and i saw three red bumps on my
daughters thigh. and it just crossed my mind...can i take these into my
car?????? i just was wondering if anyone else had any ideas and i needed to
vent...not something u wanna talk about with all your friends....

The center leg is for support -- I really think you need it.  You will have to get an inspection mirror that comes with a slide out handle.  Use flashlight so you can see.  You can get twin size beds on wheels and then you can put them together to give you a larger bed.  You can move the beds away from one another for inspection purposes.

Subject: [Bedbug Support Message] yet another question.... this time on bed frames

And whatever hopes my fiance and i had on starting to plan our wedding are out the door at this point.

kv....you say that you live in an apt.complex....So this means that your apt. has shared walls with other units, shared wiring, and shared plumbing....bedbugs travel from unit to unit via the inside wiring and plumbing conduits...so you MUST ask the bldg. manager and the exterminator if all the adjoining units have been questioned and if they too have bedbugs they must get treated. In the meantime it sounds like you are doing everything within your power to control them.  Some exterminators shoot a dust into the interiors of the walls so you might want to ask them about that.  Very unfortunatley, bedbugs can get into a car...please go onto the bedbugger.com site and ask in the forums about treating your vehicle...there are people there who have had bedbugs in their cars.  I had bedbugs in my car, I think, but I was able to leave it sitting in the hot sun for several months, and I self treated it...bedbugs are indeed a terrible thing to have, we here are  accustomed to people venting...please read all of the articles linked on bedbugger and other helpful sites so that you can get all the info. you can.   You should be able to communicate with the exterminator and your landlord or bldg. manager , asking them what chemicals they are using and what their plan of action will be.  It will be almost impossible for you to rid your apt. of bedbugs IF those apts adjoining yours are infested...just keep decluttering, vacuming, but if the exterminator is using any chemicals you need to know how you should clean or vacumn...please feel free to ask questions...the people on this group understand the trauma of bedbugs....deb
