hi there:
first of all, i'm glad that you found us. it sounds like you're
going through a really bad situation, and i know from experience that
it can help to 'talk' to others who have gone through something
similar.
last december, i moved from my bedbug infested apartment into a new
apartment. it was the best thing i could have done. however, it was
also a very painful process. i was extremely worried about taking
the bugs with me, so i did not move anything into my new apartment
that could not be washed. this meant i only took my clothing and my
kitchen stuff. i threw out 18 bags of garbage during that move.
i had a ton of books (i'm a student and an avid reader) which i have
put in storage. as i'm sure you know by now (thank you, internet!)
the lifespan of a bedbug is up to 18 months without feeding. i'll be
retrieving my books after that time period. i've also heard that
exposing them to temperatures below freezing or above 100 degrees for
4+ hours can work.
my basic task was to determine what in my apartment was really worth
storing, and what was best to dispose. my television and expensive
furniture made the cut; they are tightly wrapped and will make their
reappearance in june 2007. for me, i just decided that living on a
very simple and minimalist level for a while was preferable to not
being able to sleep or relax in my home. i can honestly say that i
am a millions times happier in my new, bare apartment.
i'm not sure how to find out if i building has bedbugs. what city
are you in? you can check with the health department for any
registered complaints. and in response to your other question, be
very, very careful when spraying wood with pesticides. one of the
exterminator visits to my old apartment resulted in $2500 damage to
my beautiful furniture.
please take care, and feel free to visit the board as much as you
need it.
