Folks, this is a reminder that its a dangerous world out there.

I received some very suspicious activity via instant messenger (IM). I received the following message via Yahoo IM this morning from a friend's Yahoo IM:

The page that loads looks like Yahoo Photos and asks for your Yahoo username and password to login. However, the action within the code shows that your Yahoo credentials are sent to a highly suspicious e-mail address:

As far as I can tell there isn't any information on this in Vulnwatch, Vulndiscuss or Bugtraq.

I talked to some friends at Arbor Networks and Support-Intelligence who are phishing experts and these threats are becoming both significantly more common and blended with other threats such as botnets.

Moral of the story? Don't click on strange links.

Please help to increase awareness of these threats and do not submit your username and password to websites sent to you via IM or e-mail. Also, please be notify those folks you interact with to beware as well.

If there is a chance you or someone you know has taken the bait, change all of your passwords immediately and stop sending any confidential e-mail to your Yahoo e-mail address!

A virus attack on bangaloreMT.com via yahoogroups to send attachments what seem to be sexual content, but actually virus, which originated from IP address
66.218.66.167, CORTLAND, NY, UNITED STATES was intercepted and deleted.
Another virus was received from IP ADDRESS:  210.211.184.180. 
If the IP address belongs to anyone in the group and it has sent virus without your knowledge, pls. run antivirus and change your password.

bangaloreMT.com believes in ZERO spamming. spamming or sending a
virus
is an international criminal offence. in india if cyber crime is
going
to happen a person can be arrested, it is said, even without a
warrant! the punishments are very severe under law.

bangaloreMT.com has found out the method used by the spammer.  the
method is simple... spammer found out which yahoo ID is unmoderated
then he sent message to the group in the name of that yahoo ID from
servers that do not verify the senders address.

i can give an example if u did not understand the above. when u send
greetings from websites, it asks u for 'from' email id and 'to'
email
addresses. whatever address u put as 'from' even be it something
like
presidentofworld@... and send it to ur email address, u will
find in ur inbox that a mail has come from 'presidentofworld'. this
method is spoofing, but only that spoofers dont need a greetings
website to do this !

i would like to add that the message sent to groups was actually
neither
from 'bangaloremt' id or 'kitta' id though both are legatimate yahoo
ids, but rather these were used for spoofing since the spammer found
that messages from these ids were not moderated.

however, we have tracked the orginating IP address of the sender
from
where the message orginated...

if u want to see from where a spam has originated visit

headers option.

the problem has been solved now by moderating messages sent even by
moderators/group owners before being sent to groups.

What is a virus?
Virus is a computer program that runs the program, which is aimed at destroying
your useful programs or what is stored in the memory or even cause permanent
damage to your hard disk.
What is spoofing?
Special computer programs hidden inside computers attacked by viruses, search
every page you open on internet for email address, it could be even when you are
opening a mail. Once it gets a list of email addresses, it starting spreading
itself or sends the virus to other email ids listed.  This means a friendly mail
supposed to be send by your friend could have actually been sent by a virus
which spoofed your friends id.
Lesson: Never open any attachment without a specific detail on what is its
content. Never open any unknown emails. Always run antivirus before opening
attachements.

companies it will only have .doc extension. Do not open any ATTACHMENTS coming
