Sub: Increase of population and length of hair through
hair oils
The question asked by sunseril opens up a wide
discussion topic. It is heartening to note that a
custom under rejection as out-of-fashion, is being
revived.
Amongst various reasons causing hair loss, lack of
hair oil is one major reason. If there is no other
specific reason, problems such as hair loss, premature
graying/bronish tinge, brittleness etc, hair oil alone
will minimise, said Acharya Vagbhat millenium ago.
Eyes, ears, nose and tongue function more efficiently
in addition. Head is protected from Vatic disorders
such as facial paralysis, as oil massage pacifies
Vata.
Brahmi and Aamla proposed are OK. One can add Jaswanti
flower (Hibiscus) powder and Bhringaraj powder also
for lustre and hair growth. One more highly useful but
controversial, less well known or rather unknown herb
can be discussed at another time. Though fresh juices
of leaves or fresh flowers are desirable, powders are
also useful. Unless one desires to enhance specific
function, equal by weight mixture is the rule of
thumb. Simplest form of hair oil procedure is as
follows:
Mix all powders, take 100 gm mixture and add 30 gm
water to make a consistent paste. If juices are being
used 100 gm juices are to be taken. Add them to 1 kg
of oil and stirr well. Seasame oil for Vata prakruti,
Coconut oil for Pitta prakruti, mixture of Seasame and
Castor oil for others. Castor oil is thick in
consistency, not liked by many.
Heat the vessel contyaining oil on a slow simmering
heat, while stirring well. Broth will form which should
be removed by a spoon. Once the water part is boiled
out, no more bubbles will form. In any case, heating
to be limited to 10-15 minutes, in order to minimise
the change in character of faty acids in oil and loss
of vital hair nutrients. Remove from fire, strain and
let cool. You can add some aroma causing essential
natural oil, if desired but best avoided. Bottle the
oil.
Massage the scalp by using fingertips alone for 5-10
minutes. Best time at bed time, since next morning
herbal shampoo will ensure oil retained for whole
night and also good sleep is ensured. 100% herbal
shampoo will not cause much lather.
For pitta prakruti people, “Saptamrut Loha”, made by
using following ingredients, can be taken 2 tabs (125
mg each) chewed and swallowed with milk twice or
thrice a day. This is recommedned to reduce pitta
relevant to hair loss.
Yeshtimadhu,
Harde,
Behada (Vibhitaki)
Aamla
Loha Bhasma
Country Cow Ghee (Clarified butter)
Crystal sugar
This is a traditional medicine, can be purchased at
pharmacies or online.
In addition, avoid going out in sun, staying awake
late nights. Early morning walk on wet dew bathed
grass desirable. If your yoga teacher permits,
Sarvangasana, Shirshasana will boost the healing
As far as possible, take only milk and sugar for a few
days at least. Salt should be avoided. Sour things
like yogurt are not useful. Pungent, hot and spicy
food should be avoided. Soaked dates/raisins described
in earlier messages are also desirable.
Kept free from worry, anxiety and passion. Instead of
hot water use Cold water for washing the hair. In case
there is harmone imbalance indicated by irregular body
clock, improper discharges, etc. contact nearest
Ayurvedic expert for treating the same.
