Re: [awls] Re: choice of surgery

My doctor has done sleeves for more than 3 years, FYI.

Two people I know who were sleeved, one in 'the old days', say that the size of the sleeve done in the operation now is more restrictive.  Indeed, they each can eat a piece of toast, but one has to take 20 minutes to eat a piece, where the other (who has a larger sleeve) has no problem downing it quite quickly.

One of the important thing about managing a sleeve well (and I have one now) is knowing how much you can eat.  It is vitally important to remember that you can stretch your sleeve (just like you can stretch the part of the stomach above a band) by overeating all the time.

Remember, either operation is a tool.

The benefits I have found with the sleeve is that with the greater curvature of the stomach gone, the constant food craving that some have disappears completely.  You know that craving.  The one that says "I'm not full" and you could be chockers.

I know that for myself, I'm still only able to eat the better part of a cup-and-a-half of soup, or about a third to half a dinner plate of food before I'm well and truly full -- four months on from the surgery.

For the record, I'm down 28kg since surgery, and 40kg since last January.

hi leah,
i too love the sound of the sleeve as i have had band complications
however in my research i noticed that no-one on the sleeve forums had
been sleeved for more than 18 months so i rang around the sydney
doctors and had a chat.  the doc that does the most sleeves in sydney
has been doing them for more than 2 years and his patients are
returning as they are hungry and gaining weight.  i have heard another
sydney is no longer doing them because of this. i think you would need
to be prepared to continue onto to a by-pass if need be as it was only
designed as a stepping stone to by-pass anyway.
me, i would pretty much do any of the options now but whatever your
choices please do all your research.
Jodie
