Programs, Georgian Court University
"READING: AN OVERVIEW: FROM PHONEMIC AWARENESS TO FLUENCY TO
COMPREHENSION"
Reading, being the crux of all learning, serves as the most
fundamental factor
in the individual's ability to learn.
Inevitably, problems with reading interfere with a student's success
in
school.
"Phonemic Awareness to Fluency"
This presentation will introduce the participant to the Orton-
Gillingham
approach, with the emphasis on phonemic
awareness, leading to the development of fluency as the bridge to
reading
comprehension.
and
"Comprehension"
Within the components of reading, comprehension represents the major
goal, for
without understanding, learning does
not occur. This workshop will review the levels and types of
comprehension and
present strategies to develop
comprehension skills in a variety of reading genre. Techniques to
accommodate
learners of different ages will be
presented via activities and simulations. Emphasis will be on
strategies to
help students gain meaning of printed
material ranging from singular words to comprehending connected
discourse.

Session C
Janet M. Krebs, CCC-SLP, Communication Therapy Center
"KIDS TALK: BUILDING SOCIAL PRAGMATIC LANGUAGE IN SMALL GROUPS"
Many children are able to learn language structures by role
imitation. They
can usually learn carryover in rehearsed
situations. However, many children use little variation and
flexibility to
adapt their responses to the inevitable changes
that occur in an unpredictable environment. Use of small group
settings has
enabled the teaching of flexibility of
response, both verbal and visual. As a result of participation in
these
groups, children learn to share information with
others, use of language for discussion and problem-solving,
alternative way to
respond in a situation, appropriate social
greetings and ways to address people, ways to gain attention, use of
reciprocal language, body-space parameters and
verbalization during pretend play.
Session D
Jerry Tannenbaum, Attorney-at Law
Partner, Schnader, Harrison, Segal and Lewis, LLP.
"STUDENT-ON-STUDENT BULLYING & HARASSMENT:
ITS RELATION TO CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS"
One in ten children is bullied regularly. Every month 250,000
children report
that other kids physically assault them.
Of course, many do not report this. One in four children identified
as young
bullies will have criminal records by age
30. 160,000 students miss school every day because they feel
intimidated by
their peers.
Our speaker has practiced in the areas of general civil litigation,
with an
emphasis on employment discrimination and
education law.
This session will address legal rights and issues involved, and
include basics
in Effective Planning, Free and Appropriate
Education, student discipline, and school-related bullying and
harassment.
This session will be of interest to educators
and parents.
