How lucky you are to have been blessed with two special kids! That's
wonderful your older daughter realizes how much we can learn from our
kids.
Too bad so many adults can't be so logical. Richie

Hi Folks,

I'm less upset about the hacker since he hasn't
visited lately and there seems to be no damage. I
still haven't got things set up to assure he won't be
around, but that should happen shortly.

Alex,

This is good news. Let us know when it is happening
and other "aspies" who may be participating. They are
my favorite autism group on the net.

My little angel has a behavior similar to the hair pulling. Ear feeling and
sometimes folding. The cartilage in my ears is broken at the point of
folding. OWWWW!
but it is also a calmative for him, so I let him do it.

OWWW! Is right. I know if the little girl is playing with my hair, I let her,
if she pulls it I tell her gentle. If she keeps it up, then I take her hands
away. Her mom is an at home hairdresser, so some of it is imitation. I am
going to encourage it. But OWWW.. my ears hurt just thinking about that.

Hi folks,

Well, here I am - one of many suited people - but nominal Aspie along
with one or two others at this do. Food's good, but is rather annoying
that Martijn's paper hasn't been released yet - would have been nice to
see it over a fast leased line.

MArtijn, any chance you could forward me the text of that doc you've
submitted, as it's otherwise going to be hidden behind a hell of a lot
of Shockwave stuff.

I've already suggested that email-based search engines be added, and
that users on store-and-forward links be considered. I know the site
looks good - but it's only really responsive on a leased line. Which
precludes a lot of low-earners.

Food's good - they've even got tiger prawns... and I'm currently
talking with Jane Asher! :) Even ended up with a couple of two-shots
of her and myself taken while I was explaining about ADSL etc!

I've even been finding bugs on the site for RMR to fix... then again, I
*am* a techie...

Ah well - here I am, with a glass of wine, and there's another event
going on tonight that I may well come along to. Today's a fun day -
never thought that I'd be hobnobbing with the movers and shakers in the
autism community...

Alex, having a good day off work

Hi folks,

It happened today. I should be sending a bulletin out with this batch
when I get home; am writing this in the Charing Cross Road branch of
Borders. We were invited to the lunchtime event; there is another
cocktail-type thing going on now... but that would just be the usual
schmoozing bullshit.

Will tell you all about my day later.

If you want my opinion of the designers - they suck
its very good graphic design I will grant you but they are incompetent web
designers and programmers because they have no consideration for the average
internet user who wants information and not the look of it.
because it is possible to create this shockwave stuff they assume we
actually want it
an old fashioned html page with sensible hyperlinks would be so much faster
and so much more accessible
even my graphic overloaded site is more comprehensible than this over
designed rubish

Hi Jim,

Let me know if you get this post from the list. If
not then I'll email egroups about it.

Draft - Proposed Policy on the Use of Restraint in Publicly Funded Education Programs

  1. Definitions:
    1. Restraint - Generally: Deliberately limiting the physical freedom of an individual student by means of physical holding, mechanical devices, or the oral administration of drugs. The term shall also include seclusion in a limited space or location as a means of limiting freedom of movement.
    2. Restraint - Specific Types:
      1. Mechanical Restraint: The use of tapes, padded ties, restrictive blankets or other devices to restrict the movement of a student.
      2. Physical Restraint: Physically holding a student in order to restrict the student's freedom of movement.
      3. Seclusion Restraint: Confinement of a student alone in a limited physical space as a means of limiting his/her freedom of movement. The use of "time out" shall be considered "seclusion restraint" only if the student is completely removed from his/her classroom and locked in a location within or outside the school without an adult present.
      4. Chemical restraint: Chemicals or drugs, including prescription medication, orally administered on an "as needed" basis to limit the physical freedom of the student. Chemical restraint does not include prescription medication that is regularly administered to the student for medical reasons rather than to restrain the student's freedom of movement (e.g. Ritalin).
    3. Public education programs: Public schools, public school-sponsored events, collaborative education programs and programs serving publicly funded students, such as approved private special education schools.
    4. School Working Day: Any day or partial day that students are in attendance at the public education program for instructional purposes.
  2. General Philosophy:

Every student participating in Massachusetts' public education programs has the right to be free from the unreasonable use of restraint. Restraints should be used only in emergency situations and with extreme caution. School personnel should utilize restraints with two goals in mind:

    1. To administer a restraint only when needed to ensure the safety of the student and the school community; and,
    2. To prevent any harm to the student as a result of the use of restraints.
  3. Procedures and Training:

Each public education program should ensure that:

    1. Procedures are developed regarding prevention of student violence and suicide, proper responses to student altercations and other situations that may require immediate intervention, use of the school's code of student discipline, and the proper use of restraint. Such procedures should be communicated regularly to school staff and reviewed at least annually.
    2. For each building in which a public education program is conducted, either the principal or his/her designee should be provided with training on the proper use of physical, chemical, and mechanical restraints. Such training should include simulated experiences in the application of restraints and the effect(s) on the person restrained.
    3. Each building principal should determine a time and method to instruct staff regarding the restraint policies of the school district and state. Such discussion should take place within the first two months of each school year and should include a review of the applicable policies, as well as identification of building staff who have been trained in the use of restraints.
    4. At the beginning of each school year, public education programs should identify those classrooms and programs that serve students with behavioral difficulties and staff assigned to those classes and programs should be offered training in the proper use of restraints. Although training should be offered to all staff, the public education program should identify key staff members who are required to participate in such training.
    5. Whenever possible, restraints should be administered by trained personnel, and the administration of a restraint should be witnessed by at least one adult who does not participate in the restraint.
  4. When Restraint May Be Used:

The use of restraint is proper in the following circumstances:

    1. The student's behavior poses a serious threat of injury to self, others, or property; and,
    2. All less restrictive alternatives have been determined inappropriate or ineffective or have been tried and have failed.

No type of restraint should be used as punishment or to control a student's behavior over an extended period of time. The Department strongly discourages any use of seclusion restraint in public education programs.

  5. Proper Administration of Restraints:
    1. Chemical restraint:
      1. To administer chemical restraint on a PRN ("as needed") basis, school personnel should obtain the written authorization of a physician who has treated the student and also obtain verbal authorization from a physician (treating or non-treating) prior to administration of each restraint.
      2. Chemical restraint may be administered by doctors, nurses, or those school personnel who have been trained and supervised in accordance with the Department of Public Health's regulations regarding the administration of prescription medications in public and private schools, 105 C.M.R. 210.
      3. Administration of chemical restraint should comport with all other requirements of 105 C.M.R. 210.
    2. Mechanical Restraint:

No student should be placed or left in mechanical restraint(s) without adult supervision.

    3. Physical Restraint:
      1. A person administering a physical restraint should use only the amount of force necessary to stop the dangerous or violent actions of the student.
      2. Whenever possible, physical restraint should be applied by holding the student in an upright standing or sitting position. Prone restraints should be used only when directed by trained personnel and should never result in a student being held in a face-down position.
    4. General Guidelines:
      1. No restraint should be administered in such a way that the student is prevented from breathing or speaking. No restraint should be administered in such a way that the student is physically harmed by such restraint(s).
      2. When a physical or mechanical restraint is used, to the extent that the student is able to communicate, she/he should be offered the opportunity to have a restraint removed at any time that he/she agrees to cease the dangerous or violent behavior. Such offer should be made periodically throughout the restraint.
  6. Notice:

    Upon administration of a restraint:

    1. The school personnel who administered the restraint should verbally inform the school administration of the restraint as soon as possible, and by written report no later than the next school working day. In a public school, the principal or his designee should inform the superintendent of the school district of the restraint by written report no later than the next school working day.
    2. The school principal or his designee should verbally inform the student's parents of the restraint as soon as possible and by written report postmarked no later than the next school working day following the use of restraint. The notification should include, as necessary, information on any action(s) that will be taken by the school district and recourse available to the student or the student's family.

Disclaimer: This policy is not intended to deter any individual from reporting to appropriate authorities a crime committed by a student or other individual. This policy does not prevent State law enforcement and judicial authorities from exercising their responsibilities with regard to the application of Federal and State law to crimes committed by any person.

I agree. as a closet webmaster myself, I think they need to follow the
k.i.s.s. rule for something like this. Leave the shockwave and java for mtv
and vanity sites. This is too important to use as a demonstration of web
skills. Less flash, more easy access to the content. Great idea, poor
execution

Naltrexone Plus Communication Training Reduces Self-Injury
Behavior in Patients
            With Developmental Disabilities

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WESTPORT, Sep 20 (Reuters Health) - A combination of drug and
communication
therapy is effective in the reduction or discontinuation of
self-injurious behavior in
patients with autism or severe mental retardation, Vanderbilt
University researcher
Dr. Travis Thompson said in London at the British Intellectual
and Learning
            Disabilities Conference.

Dr. Thompson and colleagues assessed for 3 to 4 weeks the
behavior of 29
school-age children diagnosed as autistic or severely retarded
and then randomly
assigned them to a weight-adjusted dose of naltrexone or
placebo.

"There was an immediate reduction of 50% in self-injury
behavior in the children on
naltrexone alone," Dr. Thompson said. An additional 50%
reduction in self-injury
behavior was observed when communication intervention training
was combined
            with naltrexone therapy.

For patients on combination therapy, Dr. Thompson reported
that "...self-injury
behavior stopped in the vast majority." The researchers
observed no side effects
            associated with naltrexone treatment.

"Self-injury behavior in patients with autism and severe
mental retardation can be
treated and, in most cases, can be controlled," Dr. Thompson
told Reuters Health
            prior to the meeting.

Meanwhile, Dr. Thompson's group has diagnosed sleep disorders
in 14 of 15
individuals institutionalized for autism or severe mental
retardation with a pattern of
self-injury. Dr. Thompson said that these recently reanalyzed
findings are leading
his group to "...look at the relationship between serotonin
defect and self-injury as
            a possible explanation."

Hi Jim,

It's good to see science is catching up with what we
already know. A few more studies like this and people
will be tripping over themselves to do FC or at least
augmentative.

Ditto. Sometimes I just want to pull my hair and scream......I guess that
sounds a little autistic......but I really get frustrated hearing again that
it's the parents inability to parent that causes autism. As a teacher I see
parents every day who do no parenting and their little children are
perfectly able. Give me a break. Mona
