Yes, this is a common question - and I have come to much the same
conclusion as you.
I still use EFT - and it's still by far the easiest way in for someone
new to energy psychology. It builds confidence in the "mad" notion
that stimulating meridians can have an effect on emotional state and
physical state.
Once that is accepted, it's then not such a big leap to some of the
even "madder" ideas in AFT.
(I mean "mad" from the point of view of Western / allopathic medicine)
For me too the big advance is the use of the Map of Consciousness to
track down core beliefs.
I think Gary Craig himself says many times that when EFT "isn't
working" it's because we haven't found the core issues yet.
And when these core issues are unconscious it's going to be really
hard to find them just through conversation.
I've experienced this directly working with clients using EFT.
Sometimes there comes a point when we just seem to be "going round in
circles" and not quite cracking what's going on.
That's the point I usually switch to AFT.
The other really useful aspect of AFT is the focus on finding blocks
in the way of clearing beliefs. (e.g. safety, possibility,
deservedness etc).
Of course EFT would understand these as reversals and they could
perhaps be cleared with EFT - if they were identified.
Having said that, now I'm familiar with the Map of Consciousness I do
find myself using it during EFT sessions aswell. i.e. I find myself
hearing the blocks and Level of Consciousness and guiding clients to
tap on what I know are relevent beliefs and reversals around those
levels.
The Map of Consciousness is will worth learning if only to heighten
your linguistic awareness of what clients are saying during sessions.
For any newbies wondering what the Map of Consciousness is, you can
see it here:
