Dear ATEP Program faculty,
Kindly share the following information with your students.
I will be taking a group of students from the Montclair State University
ATEP to England during our spring break 2009. Tentative dates March
12-21 (Thursday-Sat) departing from Newark Airport. We are working with
Global Ed on campus and have been given the OK to open it up to other
ATEP students. Cost is around $2500 with 1/3 due Nov 1 and Dec 1.
Interested students need drop me an e-mail (subject line ENGLAND) from
their school account. This assures that they are in on all info that
goes out regarding the trip. The email should be followed by a snail
mail short letter of endorsement from their PD stating that they have
been accepted into an ATEP program and will be a student in good
standing at the time of travel (no probation/discipline etc issues). I
am old school and will be chatting with parents;students not willing to
agree to this need not apply. Passports need to be applied for now. I
need a xerox on Nov 1st.
Our group will be discussing the possibility of a one credit course in
September. The implication is that students with financial aid packages
may be able to cover some travel costs.
The focus of the trip will be l football, cricket and rugby injuries.
Visits to noted arena for the three sports, attending a lecture,
participating in a lecture , a service project and sightseeing. One of
our students hails from England as well a a faculty member in our dept;
so we will be relying heavily on their expertise in the planning. Thank
you for your time and assistance in disseminating the information.

I
would like to make a series of reviews such as is one. An example would
be: We will now look more closely at a muscle fiber, keeping in mind
that
there are thousands of these cylindrical cells in one muscle. Each
muscle fiber has its own motor nerve ending; the neuromuscular junction
is where the motor neuron terminates on the muscle fiber. http://physiology.healthliberty.org/
Last year when I first signed up for my first email address I was made
to believe that there is no health care crisis in our country. As a
stock holder of one small health care business here I was shocked to
found about a book about the current healthcare crisis we are
experiencing today which will affect our staff in the years to come.
There is a brief description of the book here http://tinyurl.com/5bocpd
and I just hope that the new president will make some long term
solutions to our healthcare situation. If you are experiencing the
crisis in your facility, please email me

Donald,
Here's a paper I put in JAT a few years ago that may be of some help.
It's heavy on theory, but I think it may help create more dialog for
graduates (more so than undergrads perhaps). Great list of references
too, if you want to get more into theory stuff and critical
multiculturalism.
There's also a good book for nursing education on diversity, but I can't
recall the exact author at the moment (it's in my office), but I "think"
it's Galanti. You can prob. find via a search on B & N, or Amazon.
Good luck.

The latest edition of the Athletic Training Education Journal is now online at
www.nataej.org. The articles published this month, in addition to its two
regular columns (AT education listserv highlights and current literature
reviews) talk about role orientation of ATCs, a four-corner model for curriculum
development, and spirituality in ATEPs.
IMPORTANT: We are also asking for submissions to the ATEJ. If you have heard a
speech or written a paper that would be beneficial to other AT educators please
consider submitting your manuscript and encourage others to do so at nataec@... Thank you.

My name is Jake Resch and I am the current web manager for the World
Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy. I would like to create
an informative site of international Athletic Training
educational/internship opportunities as a reference for interested
undergraduate/graduate students. This information would be available
via the WFATT website and would be accessible to anyone interested
free of charge. I would also look at this information as a resource
for Athletic Training faculty that are interested in setting up such
opportunities through their university to gain contact with those
that have already established such programs.
In order to create this directory I would appreciate the following
information:
A)University/Private Company Name
B)Program Title
C)Brief Program Description including cost/length/where and how the
program is set up in regards to academic/clinical experience.
D)A link to your website
E)A contact person complete with e-mail address.
F)A logo for your University/Program that would be able to be posted
along with the corresponding information.
If you have such a program and would like to be a part of this
resource, you can relay this information to me via this listserv or
e-mail me at jeresch@.... I look forward to providing this
service to our students and am continually motivated by hearing what
new programs are being established even as I type this message. I
truly am excited about the future of our profession and realize our
students are the evolving face of Athletic Training. Providing our
students with these programs allows a means of professional and
personal development, aids in the globalization of profession, and
most importantly presents the opportunity for a life-changing
experience allowing the student to gain life-long professional and
personal friendships. Thank you for your time and consideration of
this request and I'm excited to receive your replies. Take care.

Thanks for sharing the story. It is important that we discuss these
issues, not only with students but among ourselves as professionals.
While we may spend time within diverse populations, the very presence of
diversity does not mean we are culturally sensitive and act in just ways
toward one another.
I appreciate the expedient action taken by Ms. Becker-Doyle on MJ's
behalf, yet am concerned about the $2500 being applied to the diversity
scholarship fund. On one side of this coin, I see the donation as an
apology for the unjust behaviors MJ experienced from a Marriott
employee. On the flip side, I question whether the Marriott's donation
is a 'payoff' that appears as an apology, yet more importantly is a
mechanism by which the Marriott can make the problem go away? I know I
don't have the full story, yet might we all be better served to have
those monies go toward increased diversity education at the Marriott.
Maybe they already spend significant funds on diversity education for
their employees so donating to a cause the NATA supports seems like a
good thing. Yet, it appears that further discussions are necessary
within their organization at all levels in order to address employees
and/or policies that support racist and unjust actions.
How does donating monies to the NATA Diversity Scholarship address the
issue of explicit or implicit unjust behaviors? Dialogue between the
NATA leadership, its corporate partners, and associated vendors is
essential if we are going to truly support diversity within our
profession. Embracing diversity is NOT just about having more people
who don't look the same or who come from different backgrounds. It also
involves examining our values, beliefs, and behaviors towards all
people. When these micro-inequities occur, I hope we all pause to
question them and take actions to eliminate their existence.

Does anyone still have a copy of the NATA promotional video? I would gladly pay you for a copy of it. I like to show it in my freshmen intro course. I loaned mine out, but it didn't come back and the NATA doesn't sell it anymore. It explains what athletic trainers do and where they work. It's a teensy bit out-of-date, but I still like to use it.
Thank you!

Thank you, Marsha, for sharing that story with us all. It is deeply disturbing,
and I am saddened and upset at the circumstance, yet appreciative of Eve
Becker-Doyle's actions and priorities, and of MJ's restraint and character. I
will refer to it as I meet with friends, faculty, students, and staff, when I
have conversations regarding real world situations, and when I teach my "Intro

and current state of the athletic training profession, as well as the ethics and
morality of treating all people humanely and respectfully, in all aspects of

Please excuse the length of this post; the issue is important.
A distinguished (25 + year) Black male NATA member was forced to endure
a shameful, degrading, humiliating violation of his human rights on
Wednesday when a trip to the men’s room to empty his bladder took a
nightmarish turn back into the Jim Crow era. Racial profiling went to a
place in 2008, during the NATA annual meeting in the Renaissance Hotel
(owned by Marriott International) the likes of which most of us cannot
fathom. To facilitate your understanding of the sequelae of events, I
will refer to him as MJ.
MJ was a guest in the Renaissance Hotel and while on his way out,
stopped to use the restroom in the lobby area. He was prohibited from
entering by a safety manager who told MJ that he looked like ‘he walked
in off the street”. Those of us who know MJ can attest to the fact that
he never looks like he walked in off the street; he is always well
groomed. In fact, MJ irons his jeans! During this entire exchange MJ
reiterated that he needed to use the restroom. He was physically blocked
from doing so as others entered and left the facility. MJ was forced to
endure the degradation with a full bladder. Was the intent to make him
stand there until he was forced to void on himself? You be the judge.
MJ was asked to show his key, which he did, pulling it out, in full
view, from the blue NATA credential holder which we were issued. The
manager told MJ he didn’t recognize the key. MJ correctly identified his
room number when asked. The manager indicated he had to call the room.
MJ inquired as to the purpose because he was not there (in the room) MJ
was in the lobby still trying to gain access to the facilities. The
group with which MJ was traveling back tracked, looking for him. In the
lobby MJ informed them of the reason for the delay. One of the traveling
party, a distinguished St. Louis native/friend to the NATA interceded on
MJ’s behalf, however, the staffer did not back off. When MJ asked to see
the manager, the staffer misrepresented himself as the manager saying.
“I AM the manager”. It turns out he was the ‘safety’ manager.
MJ recounts that at this point, “All my rational thinking was gone.” He
was pained and he was stunned. For those of you who have never imagined
enduring this type of indignity, imagine what restraint it must have
taken at this point. As an aside, it also goes without saying that
diverse individuals in the US have a set of unique and varied
experiences which impact our view and interpretation of events. In light
of a part of MJ’s reality, a family and national tragedy, in which his
cousin James Byrd endured a grisly death in 1998, MJ’s restraint becomes
even more admirable.
MJ went to the GRI office in the convention center. His concerns were
heard and as it happens, Eve Becker –Doyle, our CEO, was there also. She
was disturbed after hearing the story as well. She was headed to a
meeting, but took MJ’s contact info and promptly checked back and
started wheels rolling at Marriott).
The back end of the story unfolds….MJ subsequently received calls from a
Kathleen Olsen (MJ understood to be of the Marriott corporate office)
and later from a Mr. Green understood my MJ to be a VP in the corporate
office). After saying how sorry he was, he wanted to know what he could
do for MJ.” Let me take you to lunch” was his solution. MJ declined
because as he put it, “I didn’t call him to do something for me I could
do for myself. I called him to make this right.” Green later offered MJ
a donation to the scholarship fund in MJ’s name. MJ declined the
personal ‘honor’ and instead requested that the scholarship be earmarked
for an ethnically diverse student. Green appeared to agree and when MJ
asked to have written documentation of the ‘offer of retribution’, he
was told that it would be given to Ms. Becker-Doyle. As of the evening
of Friday, June 20th, MJ had a copy of the letter which designated
monies in the amount of $2500 (no, I did not miss a zero) earmarked to
be placed /_toward_/ the aforementioned scholarship. Also, delineated
were complimentary room for MJ for St. Louis and San Antonio, upgrading
MJ to ‘Marriott Platinum ‘ status for one year.
And now, the rest of the story….
When MJ checked out, the staffer noted that one room had been
‘compped’.( Digress one moment….Note, one room. MJ had three rooms; he
paid for his students’ rooms also.) When MJ expressed the insurmountable
fury at the thought of staying one moment longer, the staffer inquired
if there had been a problem. Before MJ got too far into the story, the
staffer stopped him. ‘You don’t even have to say the name, I know who it
is. That’s Burgess’s [sp?] MO.”
So, why this post? I have several thought for your consideration.
First, some of your students think racism and racial profiling do not
exist, please use these events to enlighten them.
Secondly, colleagues and students should know that that their CEO acted
promptly and sensitively to these egregious sequelae of events. Ms.
Becker-Doyle was able to obtain a prompt response from the Marriott
Corporate office, such as it was. She communicated in a very timely
manner personally with MJ immediately and over the course of several days.
Thirdly, it appears to be widely known among the staff at the
Renaissance that Mr. Burgess has demonstrated a pattern of degrading and
humiliating actions toward ethnically diverse patrons. Mr Burgess’
established pattern of actions have either not been remediated or the
remediation has been ineffective. Therefore, the Marriott has displayed
support of written or unwritten policies that are degrading, racist,
oppressive and illegal. As such, the Marriott’s mission is incongruent
with the mission, goals and ethical standards of the National Athletic
Trainers’ Association. Individual members and vendors do business with
the Marriott for the annual meeting; the NATA does business directly
with the Marriott. Your dues dollars are at work. Is this what
ethnically diverse colleagues can expect from the Marriott? Is it time
that the NATA cease business dealings with the Marriott?
Perhaps this story will become a layer of your reality now and challenge
you entertain the possibility that all is not as well with the world as
we want it to be. My nine year old had an eye opener !
“When people show you who they are, believe them.” –Maya Angelou
Dr. Angelou also says something else that fits here, “When you know
better, you do better.”

LACTATE KINETICS AFTER INTERMITTENT AND CONTINUOUS EXERCISE TRAINING
Neil-
I've been using Live Text for over a year in our Master of Arts in
Kinesiology. I think Live Text does create some extra "up front"
work with setting up all the projects and assessments. I think the
great thing about Live Text for a ATEP program director is the
ability to track learning over time and to be able to aggregate
data. The cost is not that much for students considering that the
fee is for the entire time they are in the program. Our students pay
$89. This the cost of a textbook. I would use Live Text or a
similar e-portfolio system if I were an ATEP program director as I
think the positive aspects are greater than the negative. It does
take some time to get use to both from the faculty and student
aspects. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I would suggest you consider the text titled: Research Methods in Athletic
Training, by Arnold, Gansneder, and Perrin, published by F.A. Davis. The
text is geared toward your population and uses athletic training examples
throughout the book. I especially like the SPSS output files used to help
students understand how to interpret test results. More info at

There is an excellent text that has applicability to clinical practice
and covers the translation of research methods and statistics. It's a
great graduate level text:
Foundations of Clinical Research - Applications to Practice
by Portney and Watkins; Prentice Hall Health
