We do not require our students to come back for pre-season practices. We do try
to entice them to do so by allowing them to earn up to 30% of their required
hours for fall during the summer. We also have a service hour requirement each
semester where students must spend time with activities outside of their
clinical assignment such as marathons and the Special Olympics. They can earn
all of their service hours over the summer if they wish. Since many of our
students work and have families, getting a head start on the fall semester is
very appealing to them.
Unfortunately, they also have to purchase their own liability insurance if they
take advantage of any of this. Our school's policy only covers the students
while they are enrolled in a class that requires them to do that clinical
experience. Breaks between semesters are not covered. This includes Christmas
break as well. We've been having them purchase it through HPSO and I think it's
only about $25/year for students.
Good luck.
