RE: Journaling

Each of our Athletic Training Students (Levels 1 -4) has to keep a
portfolio which represents the classes taken and clinical experiences
completed throughout the ATEP. The portfolio is turned in for
evaluation at the end of each semester. The portfolio grade is attached to
current ATRN Practicum courses. If the student receives an unsatisfactory
rating (at this time it is Pass/Fail), the student has one week to edit the
portfolio and submit it for reevaluation. Students must pass their portfolio
assignment before progressing to the following semester's ATEP courses.

The students have a Structure and Guideline form that is kept in the
portfolio. This form is also available to the students via CD. The
portfolio is basically divided into 4 sections: 1) Background and
Professional Information; 2) Activities and Projects; 3) Extra Items of
Significance which includes mentoring, college involvement, awards, etc; and 4)
Summaries of Clinical/Field Experience. The Rubric for Portfolio Assessment is
also included in the portfolio and available on CD. The rubric specifically
outlines minimum components required for each semester and each level of the
ATEP.

We don't expect students to carry their portfolio to field or clinical
sites. The students are using this tool to develop and revise their
critical thinking skills, professional activities, writing/presentation skills,
and future goals. We are implementing the portfolio requirement for Level 1
students this fall. We plan on this serving as a complimentary source for
clearly defining the ATEP requirements and expectations for the freshman
students seeking admission in the professional level of the program.

The portfolio is a relatively new implementation in our program.
Initial problems have centered on the issue of quality of work. Another issue
is student's viewing this as additional work added to an ever increasing amount
of requirements. Some see the benefits and others are gradually getting on
board with the system.

These are some of the structures and guidelines we use at Midwestern
State University. We are a very young/new program and welcome any
insights and/or suggestions from our colleagues.
