Dr. Fuller (and all):
My program director and I were discussing this standard just yesterday. In our
program at Nicholls State University we keep track of all hours--- clinical and
work study and those hours are considered separate. We have shared with the
Head Athletic Trainer the new standard. In our situation there were instances
that a student was sent with a team because there was no ATC to go. In our
interpretation of the new standard, this type of action would have to stop, but
we still see our students being able to be hired as work study with the
understanding that the student is "not required" to perform athletic training
skills. May seem like a technicality but I believe the standard is open to some
interpretation and our students will be fully informed of all aspects of the
standard.
So my answers to your questions would be as follows:
1. Is an ATEP in violation of this standard if students are obtaining more than
20 hours/week at their clinical rotations?
- clinical hours should stay around 20 hours a week
2. Are these a maximum of 20 hours/week period, or an average of 20
hours/week throughout the semester or term?
- we average throughout a year and across rotations because we understand that
some rotations require more time than others
3. Should ATEPs allow students to work over 20 clinical hours/week if "they"
want to, as long as they are doing well in all of their academic classes?
- depends on if work-study and clinical hours are considered the same thing
4. What should ATEPs do if their ACIs or CIs ask the students to work more than
20 hours/week?
- our institution limits work-study hours to 20 so in our case students could
potentially (although we highly discourage against) be in the athletic training
setting for 40 hours per week
5. How do you know if a student is being used as replacement for an ATC staff
if the ATEP does not document any or all of the student's clinical hours?
- it has always been my contention that a program should keep track of clinical
hours in order to document similar educational experiences for all students. CIs
can differ in their requirements and the education facilitated during the
rotation - hours at the very least give you the peace of mind that the
opportunity for education was there
6. What types of problems has your ATEP encountered in addressing this issue?
- none so far -- but we will -- football season is not far away
7. What things have you done to ensure that this standard is understood and
practiced by your ATEP and affiliated ACIs/CIs?
- it is being addressed in our ACI workshop and I will be visiting all sites
throughout the semester. I am also starting to use a reflective journaling
assignment this semester in hopes of getting more information from the students
about their rotations
Just my two cents.
