I applaud those who have commented on the "level" of the Educational
Competencies. It shows that this is a volatile and discussable topic.
I look forward to continued input on this topic.
I encourage all educators and interested parties to comment on the
draft version of the 4th Edition of the Educational Competencies when
it becomes available this fall. However, please review this document
with a "couple of eyes". You should keep an eye on the past as it
relates to the traditional knowledges and skills of athletic
trainers; this has gotten us where we are today. You should also keep
an eye on the present where ATCs are working in settings our
predecessors would have never imagined. And you should keep an eye on
the future to provide our students the ability to use their full
potential, while not limiting their goals and desires.
With all that said, it is still a priority of the Entry-Level
Education Committee to make the Educational Competencies truly an
"entry-level" document. We cannot and should not teach our students
everything there is to know about athletic training. There's barely
enough room for what is now expected to be taught. And we've got to
leave some knowledge for on-the-job training/experience and our fine
colleagues in Continuing Education ;)!
Thank you for your involvement in athletic training education.
Sincerely,
Dan
