U.N. approaved the Supports Rights of Disabled People

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The General Assembly on Wednesday approved the
first U.N. convention to protect the rights of the world's 650
million disabled people, prohibiting their exclusion from education,
jobs and politics.

The convention requires countries to protect disabled people from
exploitation and abuse and to guarantee their rights _ such as
ensuring the blind can vote and having wheelchair-accessible
buildings.

The 192-nation General Assembly adopted the convention by consensus,
the culmination of campaign led by rights activists for the
disabled. It was the first new human rights treaty to be adopted in
the 21st century.

The convention "promises to be the dawn of a new era _ an era in
which disabled people will no longer have to endure the
discriminatory practices and attitudes that have been permitted to
prevail for all too long," said U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Mark
Malloch Brown.

U.N. member states can start signing the convention on March 30, and
it will enter into force when it is ratified by 20 countries.
Speakers urged speedy approval.

"It would be a travesty if ... people with disabilities again find
themselves at the back of the queue for government attention," said
New Zealand's U.N. Ambassador Don MacKay, who chaired the committee
that drafted the convention.

Although disabled people are included in existing human rights
conventions, their marginalization clearly indicates the need for
one their own, MacKay said.

"Attitudes need to change. Societies need to be more inclusive and
accessible and persons with disabilities need to be more empowered,"
he said, praising the 400 activists who "very effectively cajoled
governments" into approving the new convention.

About 10 percent of the world's population, or 650 million people,
have disabilities, according to U.N. figures. That makes them the
world's largest minority, and 80 percent live in developing
countries, many in poverty.

The convention advocates keeping the disabled in their communities
rather than removing them and educating them separately, as many
countries do.

It guarantees their inherent right to life, legal protection,
property ownership, control of their financial affairs and privacy.

"As persons with disabilities, we deserve to have our rights
recognized on an equal basis with all other citizens _ and never
less than this," said Pamela Molina Toleda of Chile, representing
the International Disability Caucus, which comprises more than 70
organizations that participated in drafting the convention and
lobbying for it.

Tina Minkowitz of the World Network of Users and Survivors of
Psychiatry said any laws restricting the human rights of disabled
people "need to be abolished from today onwards all over the world."
She cited the forced sterilization of disabled girls and women.

"Sign language and other alternative methods of communications must
be recognized in all situations of information, education and
employment," she added.

Welcome to the website of the Community of Freidrich Ataxia (CoFA).
CoFA is a Non-governmental and a Non-profitable society. Basically
promoting information to and about the community of Freidrich
Ataxia.It's establised in June 2001 with the primary mission of
encouraging and supporting research into Hereditary Ataxia,a group
of neurological disorder which are chronic and progressive condition
affecting coordination.
You will find information on Freidrich Ataxia (CoFA) and the related
Sporadic Ataxias, including current research, abstracts and links to
publications from scientific and medical journals, completed
research, ongoing studies, as well as information for researchers,
patients, patient families, and caregivers. The site also offers
support and information for newly-diagnosed families.

Our MISSION:

The majority of people in Pakistan are poor. The patients can not
reach skilled Doctors. At the most, they could reach the local
general physicians. The aim of CoFA society is to develop a platform
where paralyzed patients from all over the country will be able to
access professional skilled Neurologists. It is our goal to provide
free medication and diagnostic tests to all patients. After the
diagnoses of Ataxia, we will provide them full attention and free
help tools (wheelchair, walker, splint, Etc.). The whole project is
based on self finance scheme. And we will try our best to manage all
the expenses by our self.

           We have started a monthly prayer services for the
recuperation of all patients especially those suffering from Ataxia
in CoFA.  The prayer (Dua'a Mashlool), which means "prayer of
paralyzed ", is related to Hazrat Ali (as). This was written in
around 650 A.D.. A large number of people attend this prayer. After
Dua'a ; special prayers are offered for the paralyzed peoples
especially Ataxias.

  CoFA has contacts with a renowned physiotherapy center. Which is
providing us with facilities to gather our FA Patients in the Centre
for physical Ataxian exercises. It is a weekly service. The centre
has light and heavy exercise equipment under well-qualified
physiotherapist attendants.

  Community of Freidrich Ataxia has to confirm ataxias patients
quantity in Pakistan. Because it is very important to know about the
exact ataxias patient's figure, in order to provide them with
facilities and perform . our tasks more effectively.

  An other important task of CoFA is to provide awareness to the
ordinary people and especially to medical experts and the
pharmacologists in Pakistan. And bring more information and provide
news to the ataxias about the improvement and development in
research regarding ataxia disease for therapy and treatment. And
bring awareness in people in order to avoid inter-family marriages
and control the procreation.



The CoFA (Community of Freidrich Ataxia), is the platform of people
suffering from Ataxia (a Genetic Disease). It's aim is to effort is
to develop the awareness about this disease.

This is first such society in Pakistan and in the South East ,
working for all types of ataxia, especially Freidrich Ataxia. It
provides latest research information and medicine & support to the
people suffering from ataxia. This society is based in Gujrat city.

President of the CoFA is Syed Asim Shah (who is also suffered from
FA).

5th CoFA Awareness Day celebrates on 25 September 2005 at 5pm in the
Nzr-e-Qaim Hall.
The Hall was decorated with flash lights and Logo stickers of CoFA.
Many Doctors and medical professionals joined the Awareness Day. After
Talawat, program has started, Syed Asim Shah, discussed the Awareness
Day, its task and the Ataxia disease. The Doctors told the Ataxias
background, and discussed the Latest Recherché regarding Ataxia, they
hopeful the Next 5 year will be the big change in Ataxia treatment,
the Drug trial is successful with some Ataxias and said that ataxia
will be cure. INSHALLAH.. Our 5 ataxias Members also joined us and
celebrate the Day with full of joys. They also speeches and tell the
others, own life story with Ataxia. a Grand tea party for the
participants given By the CoFA. After Duae Mushlool (paralyze prayer)
