Advertising controls on MSG for review
by Aphaluck Bhatiasevi

Controls on advertising monosodium glutamate (MSG) will be reviewed,
says Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan.

She would set up a committee to look at the pros and cons of MSG. The
panel would keep the public informed about the debate.

Earlier, she met consumer and health groups who demanded tighter
controls. Sairung Thongplon, manager of the Confederation of Consumer
Organisations, said studies showed that MSG develops into a
cancer-causing agent when used in grilled products. Ms Sairung said
MSG was not made solely from natural products as claimed in advertising
but contained chemicals such as nitrogen.

Food labels should say that MSG should not be taken by pregnant women
and children, she said. Last week, deputy FDA secretary-general Sathapon
Wongjareon said MSG caused minimal risks when taken at moderate levels.

The groups want the FDA to take a harder stance.

Greenpeace Media Officer

Greenpeace marks 30 years with launch of Southeast Asian website
By Andrew Wright in Thailand 21st September, 2001

Alternative energy sources, environmental toxins, and GMO’s were all
highlighted last month as major environmental issues facing Southesat
Asia when Greenpeace launched its first website for the region.

The Bangkok launch marked the 30th anniversary of Greenpeace and follows
the establishment of the Greenpeace Southeast Asia Foundation this year.

Greenpeace Media Officer Ittirit Prakhamtong said: “It has been a long
time since Greenpeace’s beginning but we now have a branch in Southeast
Asia”.

Mr Prakhamtong said the reason the local branch had only just opened was
due to the template that Greenpeace had been developing for its regional
operations.

“The Green World template is designed to take regional factors into
consideration,” he said.

Greenpeace also launched a Manila-based Philippines office this month.

Mr Prakhamtong said: “There have been a moderate number of visitors to
the Southeast Asian site, but overall Greenpeace averages more than
30,000 unique hits a week.”

“The new site is in English and is aimed at the general public across
Southeast Asia, but in December we plan to launch a Thai-language site,”
he said.

He said: “The main aims of the site are to transparently campaign for
issues that Greenpeace considers important for the population of the
region.”

Wildaid’s Bangkok director Steven Galster said: “Our organisation has
different specific goals to Greenpeace but we both use the Internet to
inform the public.”

“Wildaid is aimed at providing direct aid for wildlife in danger by
strengthening field protection, combating wildlife trafficking and
convincing wildlife consumers to change their habits,” he said.

He said: “Southeast Asia is an important region due to high biodiversity
and a high risk to that biodiversity.”

“Greenpeace focus on issues directly relevant to people, whilst we
concentrate on providing direct protection to wildlife in danger,” he
said.

WWF (Thailand) Education Officer Siripong Thorongto said their local
website was still in development but would be established soon.

“We have been based in Thailand for several years and are currently
hiring people to develop an Internet presence,” she said.

Thai women can consider themselves fortunate, as they live in an open
society that gives them a job opportunities equal to these of their male
counterparts. However, not many make it to the top in the male-dominated
world. Here are three prominent women in three challenging professions.
A Bright Star in Politics Sudarat Keyuraphan
Minister of Public Health
Sudarat Keyuraphan, 40, launched her political career in public eyes as
a young member in the Palang Dharma Party, a new political group in the
early 1990s that won a stunning victory in Bangkok’s gubernatorial
election. As the lone young and good-looking woman with a ready, bright
smile and a clever way with strong words, coupled with her strong work
ethic, Sudarat managed to gain a firm footing and a prominent place in
Thai politics in a short time. In 1992, the Palang Dharma Party grew
into a national-level political force. Sudarat was a key player in the
process.

It is safe to say that Sudarat is a politician with concrete
achievements. She is always entrusted with significant tasks, such as
Deputy Government Spokesperson in 1992 and Deputy Transport and
Communications Minister in 1994, and she was the youngest cabinet member
at 33. She was then the Palang Dharma Party’s Secretary-General, the
first woman in such a post. Two years later, she was appointed Deputy
Interior Minister, the first woman ever in that post. She is currently a
Deputy Leader of the Thai Rak Thai Party, the core of the ruling
coalition, assuming the post of Minister of Public Health, one of the
most challenging tasks in the government.

Sudarat is the only daughter of a former member of Parliament from
Nakhon Ratchasima, Somphol Keyuraphan, who serves as an inspiration and
a model for her in her political career. She has witnessed his
dedication and leadership since early childhood.

She was groomed to become his political heiress, having accompanied her
father on his visits to poor people in remote areas, staying in the
villages. She once hoped to build up a business career, to be able to
provide for her parents. However, her father’s hopeful look made her
decide to take up a political career, at the invitation of the Palang
Dharma Party.

News from Thailand February 2002
All secondary schools to have computers

It was reported last month that all state secondary schools will have
computers by the end of this year. The General Education Department
plans to have all teachers trained in computers and the internet next
year and all students trained by the end of 2004. From 2004, students
finishing secondary school must pass at least three computer courses:
word- processing, spreadsheets and internet application.

“One needs real family support to become a female politician. For me, my
father gives me full support. My husband also supports me in this
undertaking, which he views as beneficial to the people and something
that gives me satisfaction. It is therefore easier for me. As we have
young kids, he has to take up more responsibilities. Anyway, I try to
perform my duty as a mother to the best of my ability.”

She sticks to her motto of gaining supporting votes with her work,
resulting in prompt and concrete achievements. As a politician of the
new generation, she brought in a modern management style, with proper
planning and efficiency. Her urgent task at present is the universal
health care coverage for the Thai people, setting the 30 baht per visit
program on its feet.

“The program has been launched, with preliminary success achieved in its
first phase, that is, to bring those outside the system into the welfare
system. We will need two years to adapt the entire health care coverage
system. It is therefore difficult, as the whole system is involved.

“If we are successful, the health provision system will be changed from
defensive to offensive. Medical personnel and health stations have to be
brought to the people. Thirty baht is not the expense, but the reminder
that each visit carries a cost.

“The expenses come from the health coverage system, about 1,202 baht per
head. You see, those covered in the first phase are about 20 million,
with about 3 million requiring medical care, and another five million
for hospitalization. So this is how we distribute happiness and share
suffering, with the government as the guarantor. We would next launch a
health promotion program and other programs to create health awareness
among the people. If you ask what I hope to realize now, it would
definitely be the success of the health reform program in the country.”

One of her past achievements has been traffic solutions, when she was
Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications.

“Looking back, the image I see most clearly is the roads, the major
construction projects. I am proud of the systematic thinking that was
created then, with the harmonization of all systems, previously
undertaken separately with no linkages. We have pushed for a master plan
in the mass transit system, which remains in use to this day. The
expressways have also been linked as rings and a web. At present, the
master plan has not yet been realized. When completed, the expressways
will form rings around Bangkok, extending in five directions. Traffic
will be eased to a great extent.”

She pointed out that women should utilize their strong points, honesty,
industriousness, and responsibility, as their assets, while keeping in
touch with new developments. She said that women’s weak point lay mainly
in indecisiveness. This can be overcome with thorough studies of the
issues, before making decisions based on reasons. She feels certain that
women can match men in all aspects.

In the Thai political arena, Sudarat Keyuraphan remains one of the
brightest stars, as long as she is happy working with and for the
people.

An Astonishing Star – Born for the Dead
Dr. Pornthip Rojanasunan Medical Division, the Central Observation and
Protection Center, Ministry of Justice, Spokesperson of the Ministry

Dr. Pornthip Rojanasunan, 47, has become a prominent figure in Thai
society during the past four to five years, achieving fame as a
pathologist and a forensic doctor working with the dead in various crime
cases. She is a stylish lady pathologist, with distinctive hair, makeup,
and way of dressing styles. Thus, autopsy and fashion have become her
trademarks. Pornthip is a dedicated pathologist, who is courageous and
outspoken. She adheres to transparency and fairness in performing her
duties. So major cases that involve high-profile people or that are
complicated in nature are often referred to Dr. Pornthip.

Dr. Pornthip graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi
Hospital, in 1979. She obtained a certificate as an expert in pathology
in 1985 and was certified as an expert in forensic medicine in 1995. She
became a pathologist at the Hospital of Phra Buddha Chinarat,
Phitsanulok Province from 1982 to 1990. She later became Head of
Forensic Medicine and Corpse Examination Unit of the Department of
Pathology, Ramathibodi Hospital. In the year 2000, she moved to take
up the post of Director of Medical Division, the Central Observation and
Protection Center, Ministry of Justice, and is currently working on the
establishment of the National Forensic Medical Science Office, to raise
the profile of forensic medicine in Thailand....

Hi-Tech Star – Women in Cyberworld
Dr. Kanokwan Wongwattanasin President and Co-founder of
KSC Commercial Internet Company Limited
Isn’t it amazing how an unthinkable success is achieved? Especially when
that achievement comes from a tiny chance, and grows into a real
business that leads the way in the business world.

Dr. Kanokwan Wongwattanasin, 36, built up a 100-million-baht Internet
service provider business from a chance to use the Internet to search
for Information for her doctorate degree dissertation in computer
engineering and management at the Assumption University eight years ago,
in 1993.

She realized how the Internet revolutionized her learning process and
information gathering. There was no need to go to the libraries. Using
e-mail, she could seek knowledge and information from anywhere in the
world. Her vision was broadened with the power of no-barrier
communications that brought the whole world to her desktop. Also, at
that time, media operators such as newspapers were starting online
businesses at high prices. She saw that the Internet would serve the
purpose better, at much-reduced costs.

Kanokwan started to collect information, questioning why no one was
interested in becoming an Internet service provider in Thailand. The
answer was that telecommunications was monopolized by the state. Seeking
a concession was difficult, but she did not give up. With the vision
that the Internet would become essential tool for business and other
sectors in the foreseeable future, she pushed on with the effort. After
one year, she gained a concession from the Communications Authority
of Thailand to operate an Internet business in 1994, under the names of
KSC Commercial Internet Company Limited, and Internet Knowledge Service
Center Company Limited. Kanokwan thus became the first Internet service
provider in Thailand. What was little known was that she was a young
lady under 30, armed with strong will and a start-up fund of a few
million baht borrowed from her parents....

The company operates as a “New Economy” company, with shared
responsibilities among executives and staff members. Customers’ comments
are always needed. She also gives equal importance to all personnel, so
that they have faith in the organization. At present, there are 200
staff members. The work suits her as a flexible person who respects
other people’s views....

formaldehyde & formic acid from methanol in aspartame:
Murray: 12.9.2 rmforall

It is certain that high levels of aspartame use, above 2 liters daily
for months and years, must lead to chronic formaldehyde-formic acid
toxicity, since 11% of aspartame (1,120 mg in 2L diet soda, 5.6 12-oz
cans) is 123 mg methanol (wood alcohol), immediately released into the
body after drinking (unlike the large levels of methanol locked up in
molecules inside many fruits), then quickly transformed into
formaldehyde, which in turn becomes formic acid, both of which in
time become carbon dioxide and water-- however, about 30% of the
methanol remains in the body as cumulative durable toxic metabolites of
formaldehyde and formic acid-- 37 mg daily, a gram every month.
If 10% of the methanol is retained as formaldehyde, that would give 12
mg daily formaldehyde accumulation, about 60 times more than the 0.2 mg
from 10% retention of the 2 mg EPA daily limit for formaldehyde in
drinking water.

Bear in mind that the EPA limit for formaldehyde in
drinking water is 1 ppm,
or 2 mg daily for a typical daily consumption of 2 L of water.

RTM: ATSDR: EPA limit 1 ppm formaldehyde in drinking water July 1999

This long-term low-level chronic toxic exposure leads to typical
patterns of increasingly severe complex symptoms, starting with
headache, fatigue, joint pain, irritability, memory loss, and
leading to vision and eye problems and even seizures. In many cases
there is addiction. Probably there are immune system disorders, with a
hypersensitivity to these toxins and other chemicals.
