Dietary Causes & Prevention of Prostate Cancer

The November, 2005 issue of the Journal of Clinical
Oncology (2005 Nov 10; 23(32): 8152-60) explores the role
of diet in prostate cancer development and progression.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco
Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Urology
(Chan JM, et. al.) expored the existing medical literature
and determined:

"Increasing evidence supports the important role of nutrition
in cancer prevention, including prevention of prostate cancer."

These scientists summarized the most recent data contained
in the medical literature and concluded:

"Potential protective dietary elements include tomatoes/lycopene,
other carotenoids, cruciferous vegetables, vitamin E,
selenium, fish/marine omega-3 fatty acids, soy, isoflavones and
polyphenols..."

What foods represent positive associations for prostate cancer?
Bad news for meat and dairy producers and consumers who have been
deceived by USDA. Researchers conclude:

"...whereas milk, dairy, calcium, zinc at high doses, saturated
fat, grilled meats, and heterocyclic amines may increase risk."

The recommendation:

"Until further clinical trial data are available on specific
supplements and prostate cancer prevention, it would be prudent
to emphasize a diet consisting of a wide variety of plant-based
foods...this is similar to what is recommended (and what is more
well established) for the primary prevention of heart disease."

Folic Acid Supplements are a Health Hazard, John McDougall, MD:
Murray 2005.11.01

Thursday, November 17, 2005

Any unsuspected source of methanol, which the body always quickly and
largely turns into formaldehyde and then formic acid, must be monitored,
especially for high responsibility occupations, often with night shifts,
such as pilots and nuclear reactor operators.

ubiquitous potent uncontrolled co-factors in nutrition research are
formaldehyde from wood and tobacco smoke and many sources, including
from methanol in dark wines and liquors, in pectins in fruits and
vegetables, and in aspartame: Murray 2005.11.17

As a medical layman, I suggest that evidence mandates immediate
exploration of the role of these ubiquitious, potent formaldehyde
sources as co-factors in epidemiology, research, diagnosis,
and treatment in a wide variety of disorders.

Folic acid, from fruits and vegetables, plays a role by powerfully
protecting against methanol (formaldehyde) toxicity.
Supplements are proven to be very unsafe sources.

Many common drugs, such as aspirin, interfere with folic acid,
as do some mutations in relevant enzymes.

The majority of aspartame reactors are female.

Role of diet in prostate cancer development and progression.

Increasing evidence supports the important role of nutrition in
cancer prevention, including prevention of prostate cancer.
In this review, we summarize data for some of the most consistently
observed dietary associations for prostate cancer incidence,
briefly consider possible postdiagnostic effects
of nutrition on prostate cancer progression/survival,
discuss new but limited data on diet-gene interactions,
and comment on current areas of controversy for future research focus.

Potential protective dietary elements include
tomatoes/lycopene,
other carotenoids,
cruciferous vegetables,
vitamin E,
selenium,
fish/marine omega-3 fatty acids,
soy,
isoflavones and polyphenols;

whereas
milk,
dairy,
calcium,
zinc at high doses,
saturated fat,
grilled meats,
and heterocyclic amines may increase risk.

It is important to note that randomized clinical trial data exist only for
vitamin E, calcium, beta-carotene, and selenium
(all of which suggest inverse or no association).

Several genes, such as MnSOD, XRCC1, and GST,
may modify the association of specific nutrients and foods
with prostate cancer risk; and
research is warranted to confirm these initial observed relationships.
Until further clinical trial data are available on specific supplements
and prostate cancer prevention,
it would be prudent to emphasize a diet consisting of a wide variety
of plant-based foods and fish;
This is similar to what is recommended (and what is more well established)
for the primary prevention of heart disease. PMID: 16278466

Vegetable and fruit intake and pancreatic cancer in a population-based
case-control study in the San Francisco bay area.
Chan JM, Wang F, Holly EA. eaholly@...
Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California San
Francisco, 94118-1944, USA.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most devastating and rapidly fatal cancers,
yet little is known about the primary cause and prevention of this disease.
We conducted a population-based case-control study to investigate the
association between vegetables and fruits and pancreatic cancer.
Between 1995 and 1999, 532 cases and 1,701 age- and sex-matched controls
completed direct interviews using a semiquantitative food-frequency
questionnaire.
No proxy interviews were conducted. We observed inverse associations between
consumption of total and specific vegetables and fruits and the risk of
pancreatic cancer.
The odds ratio and 95% confidence interval for the highest versus the lowest
quartile of total vegetable intake was
0.45 (0.32-0.62), trend P < 0.0001;
and for total fruits and fruit juice was
0.72 (0.54-0.98), trend P = 0.06.
Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the highest versus the lowest
quartile of specific vegetables and fruits were:
0.63 (0.47-0.83) for dark leafy vegetables,
0.76 (0.56-1.0) for cruciferous vegetables,
0.59 (0.43-0.81) for yellow vegetables,
0.56 (0.41-0.76) for carrots,
0.51 (0.38-0.70) for beans,
0.46 (0.33-0.63) for onions and garlic, and
0.78 (0.58-1.0) for citrus fruits and juice.
Compared with less than five servings per day of total vegetables and fruits
combined, the risk of pancreatic cancer was 0.49 (0.36-0.68) for more than
nine servings per day.
These results suggest that increasing vegetable and fruit consumption,
already recommended for the prevention of several other chronic diseases,
may impart some protection against developing pancreatic cancer.

Consensus Action on Salt and Health

Here's what I eat:

Avoid all products with aspartame and MSG.
Substitute stevia (at health food stores).

Gradually reduce alcohol, caffeine (coffee, cocoa, and teas), meat, fish,
eggs, milk, butter, and cheese, hydrogenated oils, trans fats, white bread,
food additives and colors, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, fluoride, city
water, salt and sodium (< 1,000 mg daily).

Enjoy organic rice, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, beans, garlic, tumeric,
with modest use of soy products, nuts, flax seeds, almond butter, sprouted
grain breads, flax seed and olive oils, chili sauce, vitamins and minerals,
4-8 1,000 mg fish oil capsules, folic acid from fruits and vegetables
(antidote to methanol and formaldehyde),
and fill your jugs with deionized or distilled water.

Dark wines and liquors, as well as aspartame, provide
similar levels of methanol, above 100 mg daily, for
long-term heavy users, 2 L daily, about 6 cans.

Methanol is inevitably largely turned into formaldehyde,
and thence largely into formic acid.
It is the major cause of the dreaded symptoms of "next
morning" hangover.
