recent research re low dose aspartame (methanol, formaldehyde) toxicity
in children's medicines and vitamins,
for New Mexico Board of Pharmacy: Murray 2005.11.14

Methanol is inevitably largely turned into formaldehyde,
and thence largely into formic acid.

Fully 11% of aspartame is methanol -- 1,120 mg aspartame
in 2 L diet soda, almost six 12-oz cans,
gives 123 mg methanol (wood alcohol).

If 30% of the methanol is turned into formaldehyde,
the amount of formaldehyde, 37 mg,
is 18.5 times the USA EPA limit
for lifetime daily formaldehyde in drinking water,
2.0 mg in 2 L average daily drinking water.

Research on rats and monkeys indicates that about 40%
of the formaldehyde from methanol is retained daily,
indubitably as toxic reaction products.

Thus, these toxins can accumulate from chronic, low-level exposures.

Some users gradually become symptomatic, allergic, and hypersensitive,
up to the point of multiple chemical sensitivity.

Common initial symptoms are persistent headache,
body aches and pains, fatigue, weakness, irritability,
poor memory, depression, confusion, anxiety,
vertigo, tinnitus, and vision and eye problems.

Some common medicines supply low doses of aspartame in pills
that dissolve under the tongue or in medicinal chewing gums,
as well as in sugar-free gum, in the range of 4 - 8 mg aspartame.

This translates to 0.4 - 0.9 mg methanol,
which in turn at 30% conversion
gives about 0.1 to 0.3 mg formaldehyde -- well below the EPA limit.

The 1999 USA EPA lifetime limit for formaldehyde in 2 L average
daily drinking water is 1 ppm,
which translates into 2 mg for adults and about 1 mg for children.

However, reputable clinicians have published cases
of neurological symptoms in adults for single exposures
from absorption in the mouth at these very low levels of aspartame.

Children are also directly exposed to aspartame in aspirins, vitamins,
pain medicines, laxatives, and Metamucil type products,
as well as from diet soda, diet cocoa, fruit juice drinks, sports drinks,
high protein drinks, Koolaide type drinks, breakfast cereals, popsicles,
candy, and ice cream.

For example, Metamucil Smooth Texture Sugar-Free Orange Flavor
contains aspartame (phenylalanine content per dose is 25 mg),
a dose of 50 mg, a quarter of a diet soda,
which gives 5.5 mg methanol,
then giving 1.7 mg formaldehyde at 30% conversion.

A single packet of Equal sweetener gives 37 mg aspartame.

Children are exposed to formaldehyde from second hand tobacco smoke
and wood smoke,
malfunctioning natural gas stoves and heaters,
vehicle exhaust,
new cars, furniture, carpets, drapes, and particleboard,
new mobile homes, houses, and schools,
and even leather in shoes -- a cause of dermatitis.

Aspartame in children's medicines and vitamins may be,
in an unknown number of cases,
"the straw that breaks the camel's back."

As of summer, 2002, these products use aspartame:

Rx drug approvals for which aspartame is an inactive ingredient include:
Maxalt-MLT,
AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP Zomig,
Eli Lilly and Company Zyprexa,
Singulair Chewable Tablets,
Zyvox Oral Suspension,
Videx Chewable Tablets,
Amoxil Chewable Tablets,
and J&J Merck Pepcid AC (Famotidine 10mg) Chewable Tab.

OTC products include:
Tylenol Cold Chewable Tablets,
Triaminic Softchews,
TheraFlu Flu & Sore Throat Powder,
Children's Advil Chewable Tablets,
Children's Motrin Chewable Tablet,
and Pfizer Cool Mint Listerine Pocketpaks.

Please inspect the 1996 list, given below, of 83 such products.

Since liver damage is a common side effect of many pain medications,
it is of concern that formaldehyde from low levels of oral ingestion
of aspartame for ten days in rats was proved
by C. Trocho and M. Alemany in 1998
to accumulate in plasma, liver, fats, muscles, brain, cornea, and retina.

There is already plenty to evidence to justify banning this unnecessary risk
to the health of children in New Mexico.

Certainly, it is high time to warn all families
about the many kinds of evidence of risk to kids.

Dear Mr. Murray,

Thank you for contacting Pfizer Inc regarding our usage of aspartame
in some of our products.
The FDA began approving the use of aspartame in new prescription drug
products over 10 years ago.*
Its' use continues in both life-sustaining and life-saving products
for both adult and pediatric use.**
It is also widely used as a sweetener in over-the-counter drug
products.***
The FDA has approved the use of aspartame as a sweetening agent
and flavor enhancer in food products including, but not limited to,
baked goods, baking mixes,
carbonated beverages and beverage mixes.****
Given the number of acceptable alternatives to this sweetener,
if the FDA had any safety concerns with aspartame,
they would withdraw the approval for this sweetener immediately.*****

* The 1996 copy of the FDA's Inactive Ingredient Guide cites an NDA
drug, using aspartame as an inactive ingredient,
with an approval date of 12/23/91.

** Recent Rx drug approvals for which aspartame was an inactive
ingredient include Singulair Chewable Tablets, Zyvox Oral Suspension,
Videx Chewable Tablets and Amoxil Chewable Tablets.

***OTC products include Tylenol Cold Chewable Tablets Triaminic
Softchews, TheraFlu Flu & Sore Throat Powder,
Children's Advil Chewable Tablets
and Children's Motrin Chewable Tablets.

****21 CFR 172.804 and Federal Register, June 28, 1996
(Volume 61, Number 126, pages 33654-33656).

*****Given what FDA did with phenylpropanolamine, this is a given.

For further assistance, please call one of our representatives at
1-800-223-0182 (U.S.) or 1-800-661-4659 (Canada),

Nov 18 2001 Hello, Merck needs to take action regarding the research
by two eminent reserchers, L.C. Newman and R.B. Lipton, that the
4.20 mg aspartame in each $ 14 10-mg tablet of Maxalt-MLT, a potent
migraine drug, worsens migraine in some people.
While this dose is just 2% of the 200 mg aspartame in 16 oz of diet
soda, its toxicity may be increased by direct absorption,
as the wafer melts in the mouth.
Aspartame reactors often have severe symtoms from a single stick of
chewing gum.

Dennis W. Choi, PhD, your new Exec. VP, Neurosciences, who has a
particular expertise on excitotoxicity, is well qualified to assess
this problem. The end of this post offers a summary of informed experts.

I hope this information is helpful.

Any unsuspected source of methanol,
which the body always quickly and largely turns into formaldehyde
and then formic acid, must be monitored,
especially for high responsibility occupations, often with night shifts,
such as pilots and nuclear reactor operators.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aspartameNM/message/1237
ubiquitous potent uncontrolled co-factors in nutrition research are
formaldehyde from wood and tobacco smoke and many sources,
including from methanol in dark wines and liquors, in pectins
in fruits and vegetables, and in aspartame: Murray 2005.11.13

As a medical layman, I suggest that evidence mandates immediate
exploration of the role of these ubiquitious, potent formaldehyde sources
as co-factors in epidemiology, research, diagnosis, and treatment in a
wide variety of disorders.

Folic acid, from fruits and vegetables, plays a role by powerfully
protecting against methanol (formaldehyde) toxicity.

Many common drugs, such as aspirin, interfere with folic acid,
as do some mutations in relevant enzymes.

The majority of aspartame reactors are female.

Dark wines and liquors, as well as aspartame, provide
similar levels of methanol, above 100 mg daily, for
long-term heavy users, 2 L daily, about 6 cans.

Methanol is inevitably largely turned into formaldehyde,
and thence largely into formic acid.
It is the major cause of the dreaded symptoms of "next
morning" hangover.

Fully 11% of aspartame is methanol -- 1,120 mg aspartame
in 2 L diet soda, almost six 12-oz cans, gives 123 mg
methanol (wood alcohol). If 30% of the methanol is turned
into formaldehyde, the amount of formaldehyde, 37 mg,
is 18.5 times the USA EPA limit for daily formaldehyde in
drinking water, 2.0 mg in 2 L average daily drinking water,

185 times the New Jersey limit,
615 times the California and Maine limits,
1850 times the Maryland limit.

The 1999 July EPA 468-page formaldehyde profile admits that
four states substantially exceed the federal EPA limit:

Environmental Protection Agency 2.00 mg in 2 L daily
drinking water

California and Maine------------ 0.06 mg
Maryland---------------------- 0.02 mg
New Jersey-------------------- 0.20 mg

Aspartame is made of phenylalanine (50% by weight) and
aspartic acid (39%), both ordinary amino acids, bound
loosely together by methanol (wood alcohol, 11%).
The readily released methanol from aspartame is within hours
turned by the liver into formaldehyde and then formic acid,
both potent, cumulative toxins.
