It is true that there are no safety studies on Splenda (sucralose) in the
public domain, while since 1993 there have been 26 positive safety studies
on stevia in PubMed. Stevia last year was approved by the UN FAO and WHO.
There is substantial mainstream research, never funded by the industry and
its allies, about the toxic biochemistry of aspartame, a potent methanol
source for heavy users, above 6 cans daily, which always leads to a
substantial production and retention of formaldehyde and formic acid in
humans, many times the EPA limits for daily drinking water.

Fully 11% of aspartame is methanol-- 1,120 mg aspartame in 2 L diet soda,
almost six 12-oz cans, gives 123 mg methanol (wood alcohol). If 30% of
the methanol is turned into formaldehyde, the amount of formaldehyde is 18
times the USA EPA limit for daily formaldehyde in drinking water, 2 mg in 2
L water.

Natural Sweeteners, How Safe Are They?
HEALTH NEWS - Chances are you or someone in your family uses sugar
substitutes and now there are all kinds of "natural sweeteners." But how
safe are they?
If you don't like plain water: the folks who brought you Stevia now have a
new product to flavor your water. No calories, carbs or chemicals. It can
also flavor coffee, smoothies and cereal. But nutrition experts say be
cautious.
Stevia is made from an herb native to Paraguay. And while indigenous people
have used it for centuries, Integrative Medicine expert Dr. Jay Udani says
that doesn't make it safe.
The FDA only recently allowed Stevia in this county.
Yet it's gaining popularity. Consumers weary of chemical sweeteners are
searching for more wholesome alternatives.
Dr. Udani says, "Yes it is natural, but there is no toxicity data on it."
Another sweetener under scrutiny is Splenda. It's derived from sugar but
dieticians say the final product is a manmade molecule that contains
chlorine. And according to Dr. Udani, long-term studies have not been done
on Splenda either.
Dr. Udani says the substitute with the longest safety record appears to be
aspartame also known as Nutrasweet or Equal. But he adds, just like anything
in your diet, eat it in moderation.

Background: Phase 2' starch neutralizer brand bean extract product ("Phase
2") is a water-extract of a common white bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) that has
been shown in vitro to inhibit the digestive enzyme alpha-amylase.
Inhibiting this enzyme may prevent the digestion of complex carbohydrates,
thus decreasing the number of carbohydrate calories absorbed and potentially
promoting weight loss.
Methods: Fifty obese adults were screened to participate in a randomized,
double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the effects of treatment
with Phase 2 versus placebo on weight loss.
Participants were randomized to receive either 1500 mg Phase 2 or an
identical placebo twice daily with meals.
The active study period was eight weeks. Thirty-nine subjects completed the
initial screening process and 27 subjects completed the study.
Results: The results after eight weeks demonstrated the Phase 2 group lost
an average of 3.79 lbs (average of 0.47 lb per week) compared with the
placebo group, which lost an average of 1.65 lbs (average of 0.21 lb per
week), representing a difference of 129 percent (p=0.35).
Triglyceride levels in the Phase 2 group were reduced an average of 26.3
mg/dL, more than three times greater a reduction than observed in the
placebo group (8.2 mg/dL) (p=0.07).
No adverse events during the study were attributed to the study medication.
Conclusion: Clinical trends were identified for weight loss and a decrease
in triglycerides, although statistical significance was not reached.
Phase 2 shows potential promise as an adjunct therapy in the treatment of
obesity and hypertriglyceridemia and further studies with larger numbers of
subjects are warranted to conclusively demonstrate effectiveness.
