Press Release:
Sick of aspartame? No wonder, it makes formaldehyde!
So switch to Splenda. Be wary with neotame.: Rich Murray 2005.04.09
April 9 2005 Rich Murray Nutrition Advocate
Just part of the notorious toxicity of aspartame is from its 11% methanol
fraction, always fully and freely released into the body. Many drink 6 cans
a day diet soda-- that's two quarts, giving 123 mg methanol -- wood
alcohol -- which the body always turns into formaldehyde, easily 18 times
the 1999 EPA safety limit for formaldehyde in drinking water.
Formaldehyde causes cancers in people.
Since Maryland has a limit 100 times more stringent, six cans of diet soda
exceeds their formaldehyde limit 1,800 times. But does anyone ever mention,
let alone enforce, these amazing violations of public safety? I've never
heard of it. Why? In all these years of public controversy, Why?
Concerned about abortion? Formaldehyde increases spontaneous abortions,
birth defects, premature deliveries, low birth weight, first year mortality,
and mental deficits.
Concerned about crime, drugs, and violence? Formaldehyde increases
anxiety, confusion, irritability, restlessness, insomnia, poor memory, blood
sugar swings, cravings, and seizures.
The same amount of methanol is an impurity in dark wines and liquors-- its
conversion to formaldehyde is the main cause of the infamous "morning after"
hangover: headache, nausea, weakness, aching body, dizziness, blurry vision,
poor memory, irritability, depression, fatigue, red skin, and thirst. So,
if you want to describe aspartame disease in one word, just say, "Hangover".
Check it out yourself. Look at what's going on with the folks you know who
are always holding a Diet Coke or a Diet Pepsi. If it's you, then just
switch to a Splenda (sucralose) based soda. Most heavy users will notice
big improvements within two weeks of switching.
(However, consumer alert: the safety of Splenda is still very controversial,
but at least it doesn't provide any methanol or formaldehyde.)
The same wonderful outfit, NutraSweet Co., that has been embalming the world
with aspartame since 1981, has been perfecting for two decades an even
tastier derivative, neotame, which is forty times sweeter, so you get forty
times less methanol. Approved in July 2002 by our ever industry obliging
FDA, neotame right now is finally popping up all over:
Hersheys Ice Breakers Liquid Ice mints, Kroger's Thirst Rockers fruit juice
and certain powdered ice-teas. Also now used in some Detour energy bars and
certain confectionary products, such as Wrigley Chewing Gum in Australia,
Roman Meal Bread line and Herr's pretzels in the US.
"Reducing the amount of high fructose corn syrup in a beverage reduces the
number of calories and the cost," said Craig Petray (CEO of Coca-Cola),
adding that generally 25-30 percent of the HFCS is replaced by neotame."
(High Fructose Corn Syrup -- another nasty)
Even this low level still provides more formaldehyde than the EPA limit, a
hundred times the Maryland limit. People with aspartame disease can get
migraines from just 4 mg aspartame, a fiftieth of a can of diet soda. Some
of them will react to neotame. I'd like to hear about any such cases.
