Subject: Organic Style magazine interested in cases for new column
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi. I'm the health editor of Organic Style magazine and I'm working on
finding environmental health cases that could be used for a new column we're
developing at the magazine.
The column would run five to 10 times a year and would present
environmental health cases, going through the symptoms,
investigation/diagnosis, and resolution. The New York Times Magazine has a
similar health column called "Diagnosis." Medical journals also often
feature cases that the reader follows along with from symptoms to diagnosis.
We're excited about the opportunity to have a monthly column focusing on the
subject of environmental health, looking at cases that affect both children
and adults, and think it will be a great service to our readers. The best
cases, of course, involve common, relatable situations (for instance, I had
a lead on one case where a family's basement was flooded, exposing them to
lawn pesticides), have a bit of drama to them, perhaps the symptoms the
patient presents are a bit mysterious, or it's not immediately apparent what
the cause is. However, with some investigation we could point to a culprit
that could be eradicated or otherwise dealt with for a "happy ending." The
column would also be an opportunity for education: a sidebar would accompany
each story to discuss relevant preventative and/or safety tips.
Some examples of the types of cases that would be of interest:
1) mold exposure
2) mercury poisoning
3) exposure to lead in home (e.g. during home renovation)
4) respiratory symptoms due to diesel exhaust exposure (e.g., someone who
lives near the highway; school bus riders)
5) symptoms due to indoor cleaning supplies
6) symptoms suffered due to renovation in school (e.g. refinishing floors in
child's school and child comes home every day with headaches)
7) any school cases (e.g. child gets sick in classroom every fourth period;
children get sick due to off-gassing in poorly-constructed portable units
used as school classrooms)
9) pesticide cases (e.g. symptoms suffered due to lawn spraying with
pesticides either at home, school, park, etc.)
10) occupational cases where exposure was unexpected (not someone who works
directly with dangerous chemicals)
11) asthma cases
As we envision the column, the information and point of view would
be the doctor's. A writer would interview the doctor(s) involved, and the
names and certain identifying features of the person(s) involved could be
changed.
Please let me know if you have an ongoing or archival environmental
health case that may be appropriate. This would be an opportunity to reach a
broad group of readers and educate them about important environmental health
dangers. For more information about Organic Style, see below.

Organic Style is sold on the newsstand and has a circulation of 750,000.
It's owned by Rodale, the company that also publishes Men's Health and
Prevention magazines. It's reader profile is women in their 30s and 40s,
about half are parents, and they have a median household income of $75,000+.
The magazine was started in Fall 2001 for women who want to live organically
in the broadest sense-- by making smart, responsible choices about the way
they live, cook simple meals with wholesome ingredients, decorate with
environmentally friendly products, and be healthy-- but without sacrificing
style, beauty, and convenience (at least too much).
We're one of the few newsstand magazines that regularly covers environmental
health, from stories about our chemical body burden to the cleanest beaches
and healthiest cities.

list is intended to serve. The organization not only serves the maillist by
referring members to join, but is a financial supporter as well.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is a common rheumatologic disorder that is
often difficult to treat effectively.
CASE SUMMARY: Four patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome
for two to 17 years are described.
All had undergone multiple treatment
modalities with limited success. All had complete, or nearly complete,
resolution of their symptoms within months after eliminating monosodium
glutamate (MSG) or MSG plus aspartame from their diet.
All patients were women with multiple comorbidities
prior to elimination of MSG.
All have had recurrence of symptoms whenever MSG is ingested.
