My husband and I quit aspertame products a week and a half ago, my husband is
diabetic, I am not. I am losing weight, however, he is
gaining ... he is very discouraged, he has not changed his eating
habits ... he's thinking maybe its okay for him to drink fruit drinks
with sucrulose ... I told him to give it more time ... maybe his body
needs to adjust, he feels like his metabolism is slowing down ... I mentioned
that maybe aspartame tricks his body into thinking its real sugar, maybe thats
why his metabolism was higher before. I have fibromyalgia myself, and have
noticed improvements already ... we both noticed the fog lift right away ... my
pain level has improved 50% already. Maybe someone knows why he is gaining
weight, as I cannot find anything on the net about "gaining weight" after
removing aspertame.
Some of the 'oral' medications for type II diabetics are counterproductive (and even CAUSE weight gain while maintaining BGLs). One of the biggest offenders I know of is Actos. Other personal experiences with Metformin/Glucophage have been the same with extended use.
Each person is different, each person's body chemistry will be and react differently, even to the same medications. Men and Women are different. There are almost too many factors to even think of enumerating.
Aspartame is hidden in so many foods -- one of the key things is to learn to read the labels and learn the hidden places where the poison is slipped in, for no good reason other than MONEY and profits.
Many diabetics' bodies need to "learn to burn" again, and that takes a long process. Exercise, water, and lots of 'whole foods' and raw veggies, and certain carbs/starches will soon become part of your body's leaning curve and it will (or can) get better.
We still need to work with our doctors and maintain our health -- but also WE are responsible for checking into what the doctors tell us, getting the facts correctly, and working from there. Medicine is far from an exact science, and any good doctor will tell you that straight up -- those that tell you they know the answer, BE AFRAID!
Best of luck - time is your friend (and your husband's)... give it some time. Check his BGLs often and learn which foods are doing what to or for him. Listen to your body (and he to his), it will many times show you what you need to do--you just have to learn to read it.

Go to the forum I mentioned and ask questions there.
He may not have been gaining before and I doubt this has anything to do with
quitting aspartame.
They have diabetics there and can tell you how to have a better diet.
No fruit at all for sure. NO breads and or pastas. Vegies are fine.
Meds can mess up stuff too.

We won't agree on diabetic diets (nutrition and carbs). It is all DEGREES. To what degree the pancreas has ceased or interrupted functioning.
Many foods, and yes this includes carbs, in more raw and natural diets are beneficial -- again, depending on the DEGREE of the pancreas (insulin) action.
To lump any one food group is just like Doctors telling us it is OK to drink the **diet** poisons on the market.
Each body is different and each person must learn to listen to their body -- the sooner we all do, the sooner we all have an ***Opportunity*** to help ourselves and our health.
Things can and do get better, but not without effort and certainly not by doing nothing.

Often getting better is true but carbs for a diabetic is not a good thing but
you have a point.

I can ASSURE you that giving up Aspartame does NOT cause weight gain - in fact in most cases it's the very REVERSE! I wonder if he is having some hidden sources or indeed if, as the previous person said, it's the medications?
Do NOT let him believe those crazy, ill-informed Dr's who tell him to drink them, they do NOT know what they are talking about.
I am losing weight hand over fist on the Atkins Diet - I wonder if hubby could try that (or a modified form of that, if he is very big and very active) I have put about 80 people on the diet and they have ALL (without exception) lost weight. Itis only hard for the first 2 days (until the fat burning process takes over, then hunger is eliminated, and you start "eating to live", rather than "living to eat" (I KNOW how easy that is, as after break-ups, job losses and surgery, I myself have fallen into that trap before) Also perhaps your husband is younger than me, in which case it will work even BETTER for him as my metabolic rate slowed down considerably after years of yo-yo dieting.
Best of luck with whatever you decide, feel free to ask any questions you like (No, I don't SELL anything by the way, I am just PASSIONATE about what I believe in! LOL)

My husband and I quit aspertame products a week and a half ago, my husband is diabetic, I am not. I am losing weight, however, he is gaining ... he is very discouraged, he has not changed his eating habits ... he's thinking maybe its okay for him to drink fruit drinks with sucrulose ... I told him to give it more time ... maybe his body needs to adjust, he feels like his metabolism is slowing down ... I mentioned that maybe aspartame tricks his body into thinking its real sugar, maybe thats why his metabolism was higher before. I have fibromyalgia myself, and have noticed improvements already ... we both noticed the fog lift right away ... my pain level has improved 50% already. Maybe someone knows why he is gaining weight, as I cannot find anything on the net about "gaining weight" after removing aspertame.
I was wondering..is he gaining weight or water retention? Drinking more water will help if he is retaining water. I am not an expert on diabetes...but isn't eating a lot of fruit not a good thing?

Well, he does monitor his BGLs ... The only thing he has changed is removing aspartame from his diet ... he is pretty good at monitoring his body ... this is what is so frustrating, cause he hasn't changed his eating habits, low sugar intake, but he is gaining weight fairly quickly .... I told him we can go to his doctor ... some doctors laugh at the very fact that aspartame is a problem, and some actually recommend these diet drinks are Okay for Diabetics... .Well, I am going to encourage him to drink more water...and get more raw vegetables for him to snack on during the day...He's sort of limited himself to the banana, apple, and orange, but I don't think that is enough. Thanx for your advice.

There are some that may not agree with me but low carb is promoted by docs for
diabetics to keep blood sugar under control.
Lowcarber.org is the name I think to ask questions on this matter.
He should not be eating a lot of carbs because of the sugar issue.
If my mom did not do so she may still be here and I do miss her.

Fruit is allowed, and so is bread, but in tiny amounts. (Certainly NOT 3 lots of fruit in a day!) Low Carb Dieting over the past few weeks has changed my Invulin from 4 x times a day to ONCE!

You said why he is gaining here.
Banana and being a diabetic. That alone is horrible for the body.
Go to the forum I mentioned and ask questions there.
He may not have been gaining before and I doubt this has anything to do with quitting aspartame.
They have diabetics there and can tell you how to have a better diet.
No fruit at all for sure. NO breads and or pastas. Vegies are fine.
Meds can mess up stuff too.

I would not use it but it is the choice of the person as I had to learn the hard
way no MSG at all. It is hard when one is watching others eat what they are.
I went to art shows today and I got a plain hamburg. Read the lables on the
condiments and took only the safe one's. Boy am I am going to get tired of
hamburg.

The lowest in sugar of fruits is granny smith apples. My son had a terrible case of candida and a candida diet is good for diabetics because it is low on the glycemic index. One reason meds make you gain weight is because they are poison and the body recognizes this and holds water in the body so the chemicals or pharmaceuticals do not kill you. Also it takes three months to rid the body of any artifical sweetener. Pastas, breads, cereals are all carbohydrates that turn into sugar. People need to get educated about what is a simple carbo and a complex carbo. My brother in law thinks that he can have all sorts of crap out of boxes and he is a diabetic wreck. His doctor tells him that instant breakfast and glycerna bars are good for him and a bowl of cereal for breakfast---sure it helps the doctor retain him as a patient. I couldn't even eat that much garbage for breakfast and I am not diabetic. ALL of that turns into pure sugar in the bloodstream---but he TRUSTS his doctors................it drives me nuts. Those things are totally full of worthless calories and chemicals.   Â

What I learned is you can't explain it to some. It is not an easy lifestyle. It
is in other ways.
