Some of the 'oral' medications for type II diabetics are counterproductive (and even CAUSE weight gain while maintaining BGLs). One of the biggest offenders I know of is Actos. Other personal experiences with Metformin/Glucophage have been the same with extended use.
Each person is different, each person's body chemistry will be and react differently, even to the same medications. Men and Women are different. There are almost too many factors to even think of enumerating.
Aspartame is hidden in so many foods -- one of the key things is to learn to read the labels and learn the hidden places where the poison is slipped in, for no good reason other than MONEY and profits.
Many diabetics' bodies need to "learn to burn" again, and that takes a long process. Exercise, water, and lots of 'whole foods' and raw veggies, and certain carbs/starches will soon become part of your body's leaning curve and it will (or can) get better.
We still need to work with our doctors and maintain our health -- but also WE are responsible for checking into what the doctors tell us, getting the facts correctly, and working from there. Medicine is far from an exact science, and any good doctor will tell you that straight up -- those that tell you they know the answer, BE AFRAID!
Best of luck - time is your friend (and your husband's)... give it some time. Check his BGLs often and learn which foods are doing what to or for him. Listen to your body (and he to his), it will many times show you what you need to do--you just have to learn to read it.
Bill.

Subject: [Aspartame Support] Husband is Diabetic-quit aspertame same time as me-he's gaining weight???
gaining ... he is very discouraged, he has not changed his eating
habits ... he's thinking maybe its okay for him to drink fruit drinks
with sucrulose ... I told him to give it more time ... maybe his body
needs to adjust, he feels like his metabolism is slowing down ... I mentioned that maybe aspartame tricks his body into thinking its real sugar, maybe thats why his metabolism was higher before. I have fibromyalgia myself, and have noticed improvements already ... we both noticed the fog lift right away ... my pain level has improved 50% already. Maybe someone knows why he is gaining weight, as I cannot find anything on the net about "gaining weight" after removing aspertame.
