Background explanation of event
“An Evening of Art & Magic”, at the Main Street Gallery in Carrboro on Sat., Feb 16, 2008, from 7-9:30 p.m., is a community arts event that is open to the public and will benefit the locally-based film project, A New Kind of Listening. (southerndocumentaryfund.org)
This compelling documentary, by independent filmmaker Kenny Dalsheimer, tells the story of a small inclusive theater group in Chapel Hill, which over a year of rehearsals created an original collaborative performance piece. In the process, people with significant disabilities became respected and admired members of the theater community. Everyone in the group, along with
friends, audience members, journalists, and disability advocates from around the state, were deeply moved and changed by the project.
A New Kind of Listening also powerfully documents the childhood and growing pains of Chris, a young man with cerebral palsy who can’t talk because of his physical disabilities, but shows himself to have a brilliant voice. The message of the film ultimately is to question our assumption that a person who is unable to speak has nothing to say.
Because you are a strong supporter of inclusion and community arts, I am asking you to help sponsor this event by sending information about the benefit to your e-mail lists. I am attaching a pdf file of the
announcement/flyer to be sent out or posted wherever you feel there would be interest, If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at polly.medlicott@..., or (919) 493-6333.
Thank you very much. Your support of this event increases awareness of the transformative power of the arts for all members of the community.
Sincerely,
Polly Medlicott
P.S. The building will be wheelchair accessible for the night of the event. There is an accessible restroom next door at Padgett Station.
