I wanted to let you know of a program that is being offered through
the AHECs (Area Health Education Centers) in three sites across the
state. The program, "Autism Spectrum Disorders, Mood Disorders and
Psychotic Disorders: Differential Diagnosis and Treatment", is being
held in Asheville (12/8/06), Greensboro (10/5/06) and Greenville
(11/29/06) this fall. The faculty is from both the UNC-CH Department
of Psychiatry and NC TEACCH. You can get detailed information from
each of the hosting AHEC's websites. You can go to the Statewide

What Can I Expect?

The program will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of three types
of disorders – Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety and Mood Disorders
and Psychotic Disorders. The presenters will review the basic
diagnostic features of these disorders and the treatment approaches.
Discussions will focus on the similarity and differences between
these disorders and the corresponding treatment approaches.

Learning Objectives:
Identify the primary diagnostic features of high functioning autism
and Asperger's Syndrome.
Examine the primary diagnostic features of anxiety and mood disorders.
Describe the primary diagnostic features of psychotic disorders.
Discuss the basic treatment approaches to individuals with high
functioning autism or Asperger's Syndrome.
Examine the basic treatment approaches to individuals with anxiety
and mood disorders.
Discuss the basic treatment approaches to individuals with psychotic
disorders.
Examine the similarities and differences between the disorders and
their treatment approaches.
