Description
ASNCOC, the Autism Society of North Carolina, Orange-Chatham chapter, is a volunteer organization of parents and supporters that provides a forum to strengthen the local community for those with autism and related disorders.
Why join ASNCOC? Some examples:
As parents, we support one another with information and encouragement. Through the grapevine, members keep each other aware of current happenings. Mothers' groups meet for coffee, discussions at UNC-TEACCH, or nights out.
As organizers of activities, we create accepting environments for our children. A spirited Valentine's Dance brought the community together. A group of dads runs a father-son playgroup. We host summer pool parties.
As consumers of local autism services, ASNCOC members benefit by joining together to create or organize demand for group services. Recently, ASNCOC members collaborated with the Chapel Hill Parks & Rec to launch a special-needs section of summer camp. ASNCOC members provided a critical mass of participants, recruited an autism-trained teacher, and participated in the program's design.
As volunteers, we strive to support local efforts. Last year, ASNCOC raised over $2,500 for autism books to be purchased for the Chapel Hill Public Library, the Chapel Hill Public Schools, and the Chatham County Public Library.
As informed members, we seek to facilitate the sharing of knowledge. Throughout the year, ASNCOC hosts discussions on autism topics, often including professionals or authorities in the mix.
As advocates, we seek change. Our founders effected a culture of acceptance and inclusion in elementary schools. We are presently advocating for improvements in middle schools and above.
The local community needs your presence
ASNCOC is only as strong as the actions of its membership. As our children grow, we need new ASNCOC families to represent our community's youngest children.
