Hi Susan,
Julia had terrible oral thrush at 24 months and after the nyastatin didn't work,
she was put on fluconazole for a week. That seemed to clear her mouth, but about
5 months later she was diagnosed with a candida pneumonia. That led to a longer
treatment, I believe with IV fluconazole. Since last summer, she has not had a
candida infection.
I think there is a concern regarding using fluconazole too often, as the candida
can develop resistancy, but it seems that many people do a couple of courses a
year.
Julia was also treated with Enphateracin B (sp?), a nasty IV anti-fungal drug
when it was feared that she may have another fungal pneumonia. It can have
serious side effects, such as liver toxicity. It is not an option the docs like
to use, but I thought I would mention it anyway.
I have not looked into dietary means of controlling candida, but I have heard
that reducing sugar intake can help. Eating a good yogurt may also sooth the
mouth and help control the candida. Others in the group may know more.
I hope that Joseph is feeling better soon!

Subject: Re: [apeced] Thrush - Candidiasis in GI?
Hi Susan,
I can only speak from expeience about this. Amy has suffered from Candidiasis
on and off since she was very young. At first we noticed it in her finger nails
(fluconozole cleared that up). Then she seemed to go for a long period (years)
whithout it being a problem. It all seemed to flare up again last year she is
now 20. Since then she seems to have to have medication to clear it about every
3 or 4 Mths. She had an endiscopy last year which showed she had it in her
oesophegous. A week on diflucan cleared it . She also had a test to see if it
was in her stomach and colon but it wasn't. The only thing i am unsure about is
if a 20mth old can have diflucan (fluconosole). Amy first had it prescribed at
about 5 so it may be ok. Because she suffers from systeminc candidiasis i think
it is something that she will always be prone to, but her twin sis ter also has
apeced and has never had candidiasis. As your son is is only 20Mths old he
obviously cannot tell you if or how it may be troubling him. Amy said that she
felt discomfort on eating but she also has digestive problems that has been put
down to IBS not candidiasis.

Hi All-
I hope this message finds you all well and you are enjoying your
summer. I was interested in getting some advice on treating oral
thrush/candidiasis for Joseph my 20 month old. He has had thrush
every month since he was 9 months old and we treated it every month
until it came back again the next month. It has been two months now
since we have not treated it becasue it hasn't been as obvious yet I
do think it is there because his tongue has light white spots on it
at times. I am concerned that if it is in his mouth it is also in
his digestive tract and intestines and may be why he has loose soft
stools most of the time, has a poor very appetite, and strongly
opposes tart or sour foods. I was wondering if it would be a good
idea to treat it constantly to be sure it doesn't return or is it
better to only treat if the trush is really obvious yet I would think
if it is in his mouth it is probably causing him problems in his
membranes of his digestive tract too. I am uncertain if it is making
him feel bad and casuing him more problems than what can be seen in
the mouth. Also does a person with ACEPED that gets candidiasis
always have a problem with it or is it something that may last for
several months but then eventually never cause them an issue again.
I didn't know if candidiasis will be a problem he will always have.
If there are any recommndations you may have or advice given to you
by your doctors I would love to hear about it. Thank you again - we
appreciate your support so much. God bless, Susan
