Hi Aleria! I know you from the Catholic Fellowship group. Glad to see you here! Congratulations on your marriage, by the way. My daughter wanted to go to the March in January with her pro-life group from her Catholic high school, but my husband said no. She is 14, and he isn't ready to let her go due to worrying about her safety. We're still hoping to talk him into it!

Hello,
I'm new and just wanted to say hi, thanks for inviting me to your group. I'll try my best to answer abortion questions and offer support to any who need it.
I'll give you guys a little introduction:
My name is Rachel, but I'm Aleria on Yahoo Answers, and I'm 22 years old. I've been married for all of 3 weeks and am very Pro-Life. I live in Maryland so I go every year to the Washington, D.C. walk on January 22nd (going this year too!) and also to the April walk in Annapolis.
So thanks again for inviting me and I'll do my best to help those in need.

Please consider answering this young lady's question . She has an appointment for an aboriton. I answer a lot of questions about abortion, but this is one I strongly feel a need to share with the group. She is on the brink of saving her child's life and states "Tell me the risks please. Also, I kinda feel like maybe i should keep it but I don't know if I have enough money to raise it." The link is to one of her questions, but if you look in her profile she has asked two others about this pending abortion also.
Unfortunately, the pro-life resource abortionfacts.com has been taken
over by... a wrestling association?? I'll check back in a couple of
days to see if it was just hackers. Until then, be careful not to use
this as a source!
I personally won't recommend sites that focus on birth control or present abortion as a viable option. However, I respect these sites more than so called "pro-choice" sites that in reality act like the only choice is abortion (i.e. Planned Parenthood) and won't give women and girls all of the facts and options (i.e. adoption, etc.). At least they are a bit more intellectually honest than those that say they are pro-choice, but are really pro-abortion.

Tanisha and all,
I am Catholic and wouldn't be mentioning birth control either, and I don't think people should be having pre-marital sex in the first place. I don't preach about abstinence either; I just try to focus on the child and the devastating health effects of abortion. But I think we can all be united around the abortion issue from our different perspectives. The important thing is that women know they have a support system if they choose not to kill their babies. The sad thing is that girls often are coerced into abortions, such as this girl. When you read this kind of story, you realize what a lie the term "pro-choice" is.

Hi Tanisha, Optionline and other pro-life sites have info on abortion too. The key is that unlike pro-abortion sites they don't sugar-coat the risks, they don't skip over the graphic details of procedures, and they encourage alternatives. Compare Epigee's abortion page with that of Planned Parenthood and you'll see what I mean.
I personally don't have a problem with a discussion of birth control as long as it acknowledges failure rates, mentions that hormonal contraceptives won't protect against STDs, and reiterates that only abstinence is 100%. But if you prefer not to use that page, that's fine.

I definitely am NOT recommending Planned Parenthood, sorry if I didn't
make that clear! But epigee does not refer for abortion, I checked
the site very thoroughly before passing it on. Birthright,
Optionline, and similar sites (see the "Choosing Life" link file) are
probably what we will be using the most. But when I run across the
odd question that is less about abortion and more about women's
medicine generally, epigee could be a good way to provide that info
without accidentally spreading pro-abortion propoganda.

Hey everybody! I wanted to share with you a great site that I found, epigee.org. Optionline.org remains the best referral for crisis pregnancies, but it doesn't cover STDs, period issues, birth control, etc. Enter Epigee, which is very comprehensive. The best part? It encourages women to visit crisis pregnancy centers and speaks the truth on abortion! The only downside is that it doesn't (to me) seem very teen-friendly. But it's perfect for adults, especially in the women's health section.

This site says that 78% of women getting an abortion identify themselves as religious. I'm not sure about the rate issue, since we would have to know how many people in the general population identify themselves as religious. But the fact is that religious women are definitely getting a large majority of the abortions. Here's an excerpt:
" Do women with religious affiliations have abortions?
Nearly eight in 10 U.S. women obtaining an abortion report a religious affiliation (43% are Protestant, 27% Catholic and 8% another religion). Among all women aged 15–44, 51% are Protestant, 28% are Catholic and 5% belong to other religions. "

I have a question for Jackie Mitchell. You said abortion rates are higher for "religious" teens than non-religious teens, which does make sense. But do you have a source for that? I've gotten into this discussion with so many people before (I'm usually the only non- religious lifer in discussion circles, lol), and I'd like to show them a source for that if you have them, or the numbers or something. Thanks :)

You have a good point. I have thought about this before. Girls who choose to continue their pregnancies have a stigma upon them, when so many of their counterparts are killing their children with no one knowing about it. Whereas teen pregnancy can certainly be unfortunate, I admire those girls much more than the ones who abort. I suppose the statistics that show that religious teens have abortions at higher rates than non-religious teens are a result of the religious teens continuing to want to be able to "appear" pure. We all should make an effort to treat pregnant teens and young mothers with respect.

She notes that, because she is young and pregnant, she is sometimes
looked down upon worse than a drug addict. I don't doubt her for a
second. For a supposed "pro-choice" nation, the lack of support for
people who choose to be parents is deplorable.

Actually, after I sent you the message below, I found your welcome message with the guidelines in my Inbox; so you did set it up right. But thanks for writing back and adding more details. It makes sense to me and is a great idea. I have three children, two of which are under three years old; so it is difficult for me to volunteer at a crisis center due to childcare issues. However, I believe that the Yahoo Answers forum has the potential to reach pregnant women. I have noticed like you mentioned that the first several answers the crisis-preganancy-askers receive tend to be kind of nasty and "just go ahead and kill it" type responses. Then sometimes the later responses are more thoughtful.

Hi Jackie! I had posted a welcome message that people are supposed to receive upon joining, but if you didn't get it I probably just set it up wrong. I'll check on that.
The way I envisioned this group was, by joining, everyone commits to one hour per week answering questions in adolescent, pregnancy, and women's health. There are only 168 hours in a week, so with 200 members, we're more than covered! The group helps by putting all the good links in one place and, as you said, networking. But I'm not the dictator here. This is the first group I've ever started, so I am definitely open to any suggestions for making it run more smoothly.
And of course, I would LOVE for you to invite people!

Thank you for joining our effort! Before you begin, please read the
following.
1. Rules of Decorum
Obviously, it is important to abide by the Yahoo Answers!
guidelines. However, we want to do more than that. We want to
exhibit true compassion.
Sadly, anyone who asks a question about finding herself in an
unplanned pregnancy is likely to get an answer along the lines
of "Get an abortion, welfare whore!" Let's counter with a positive
message: "You CAN be a great mom, you are not alone, and we'll direct
you to the resources you need."
2. How to Answer a Question
A- If asker has provided her name, use it.
B- Give a straightforward, fact-based answer to the question. Do not
sidetrack into morality and/or politics.
C- Link to further information. Our group page contains numerous
links, sorted by category.
D- If you know that you'll be online for a while, end with "You're
welcome to IM/email me."
E- Add asker as a contact, if her settings allow it.
F- Follow up. If you see that the question has gone into voting,
vote for your own. (No, it's not to be vain- best answers show up
first in searches!)
3. Your profile
We ask that you add the following to your profile information:
"I am a member of the Yahoo Answers Crisis Pregnancy Response Team.
We are not Yahoo employees- just volunteers who dedicate our time to
giving honest, compassionate answers to questions about unplanned
pregnancy and related issues. If you are interested in joining the
team, send me a message!"
You're ready to go- thank you, and happy answering!

I felt strongly that it would be a good idea to start a group like this
to network regarding the many abortion questions that show up on Yahoo
answers. I was going to email the people I have noticed that regularly
post pro-life responses to those considering abortion. Then I did a
search on Yahoo Groups and found that such a group had just been
created! So I have joined. I notice there are no messages. So I was
just wondering if the person who started this group was intending that
the members would send a message to the members with the link to crisis
pregnancy questions that they find on Yahoo Answers? Or how do you
envision the group?
