You may not know this but the FDA has handed down new guidelines
concerning drugs such as ritalin due to the deaths of some children.
If a patient or the patients immediate family have had any heart
related problems, there should be an EKG performed on the patient
before prescribing such drugs as ritalin. Please look at a Physicians
Desk Reference for all the other bad side effects.
My personal opinion is that our children have enough other problems
without adding to them and you are certainly entitled to your own
opinion.
There are herbal and vitamin therapies that work for some children as
well as the prescribed meds.
My son takes a product with several antioxidants, vitamins, and herbs
that has helped him with the attention problem. It was noted by his
psychologist, speech therapist,OT, and PT that his attention span is
better, his response time is quicker, and he is verbalizing more. One
of the antioxidants in this product is pycnogenol. There are other
"normal" children with their only disability being ADD or ADHD who
have replaced their ritalin with this product and are doing quite
well.
