Why do the odds of having an anencephalic child go up once we have
had a anen child? I thought you chaces of having a NTD baby went up,
not neccesarily anen. I have also talked to a genetic councilor and
I believe I remember that there could be 3 causes - enviornmental,
genetic, or fluke - and that it is not sure what causes it. So how
can odds go up if we don't know which cause it is. If it's genetic -
odds are higher already. Plus, odd restart with each child. I
wouldn't think it would be any different then odds of having a blue
eyed child if it is genetic.
For any of us trying to get pregnant again - anen seems so much more
real and dominate to us than to other women/families. We have
searched for other people who have experiences similar to what we
have. Think back to before you heard you were having an anen child.
Had you even heard of it? Did you know anyone who had carried/had a
child with it? We need to remember that even if our odds do go up,
each child is a new child, and I know personally, and that it is true
for a lot of other people on this site, that we are very educated on
the disorder now - that we are doing all we can for ourselves and our
future families (folic acid, proper prenatal care) And it has been
said that we change the odds back to where they are for everyone
else.
I don't know if I'm writing this for answers to my questions - though
I wouldn't mind some, or just to try to convince myself a little bit
more. I think better when I put my mind down on a screen or on a
screen.
