RE: [anencephaly] Brei

Hi Brei.  My daughter's first baby born eight years ago was anencephalic and a week ago today she gave birth to her second healthy baby.  Her first is 6 yrs. old.  We do still hold our breath in the delivery room, but she takes major doses of folic acid also.  She wants to have a third child in another year and a half or so.  I know the pain of losing a child never goes away, but I hope that it eases quickly for y ou.  Marsha Knight, grandma to AAron, who went to heaven eight years ago.

Hi Brei,
Sadly the chances of you having another anencephalic baby are higher than a woman who hasn't had a baby with this condition. The 'average' woman has a 1 in 1000 chance of having an anencephalic baby. If you have had a child with the condition your chances of carrying another jump to 1 in 100, BUT if you take high dose folic acid (in the UK it's prescribed by a doctor at 5mg) for 3 months before trying to conceive and 3 months after conceiving, the risk falls back to 1 in 1000.
My first daughter had the condition, but I have went on to have 3 perfectly healthy children and have another due in 2 weeks.
Good luck
Love Yvonne xxx
