I don't know if it's possible to ease the anxiety, but for me taking the
extra folic acid was as much a psychological help as it may have been
physically. I at least felt I was doing something that could help
prevent it (although I don't think research yet knows for sure what the
actual cause or prevention for anencephaly is). Still, it seems that
most of us on this list serv have reported taking an extra dose of 3 or
4 milligrams of folic acid (in addition to the 1 mg contained in our
prenatal vitamins). For me, I started taking a prenatal plus 3 mg of
folic acid in March of 2002 (after having a baby girl with anencephaly
in Jan of 2002), started trying to get pregnant in July, got pregnant in
October, and had a healthy baby girl in June of 2003.
