by the way, we deal with special occasions at school by sending a half dozen cupcakes in, well wrapped, which are kept in the freezer and labeled, so that every time a kid has a birthday, my sons' teacher takes out a cupcake so that my son gets a treat just like everyone. And in the summer, they would have ice cream Fridays when he was very little, and we kept Tofutti bars in the freezer at school, again, so that he could have one (and the other kids were always able to choose a Tofutti bar too so that my son wasn't necessarily getting something different from everyone.) A child in my son's class at his Jewish Day School is allergic to nuts, peanuts, eggs and dairy. He can eat fish. He has managed- lots of fruit, popcorn, homemade baked goods, tofu cream cheese. He definitely eats meat at home. The other parents in the class tried to be good about bringing in treats for birthdays that he could eat and he kept things in the classroom to bring out for such occasions. If it is important to you, I wouldn't rule out Jewish school because of the allergies. School and food allergies is education, education, education on your part. Sometimes the trail has been blazed (previous food allergic kids) and sometimes you are the trailblazer. Good luck- Elizabeth

In my opinion, there are two ways to address this, as many other rules in Judaism (again, MY OPINION): the LETTER of the law, and the spirit of the law. While...
