This is an open discussion forum, loosely moderated, for all addicts (in recovery, recovered or in active addiction) and those that suffer from mental illness or co-occurring disorders. This group's vision is to advance the public awareness of addiction and recovery issues so as to try to help eliminate the stigma that surrounds both through education, sharing and advocacy, to strive to obtain equality. Stigma IS a real barrier to recovery. Stigma is also closely related to stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. Society resists open-minded thoughts and discussions about addiction and mental illness, this forum doesn’t. More people quit alcoholism and addiction on their own than do so through treatment. The paranoia of the temperance and the prohibition era, which has culminated in AA disease dogma, needs to be replaced with an emphasis on personal, parental, and community power.
