I thought this group would be interested in this petition. I received
notification of this, from a friend of mine working at the CDC
(although apparently it was started by someone working on the CARE
project).

Low-risk cesareans carry increased neonatal mortality risk
31 August 2006
Birth 2006; Not yet available online
Low-risk mothers who opt for a cesarean face a higher risk of infant
and neonatal mortality than those who deliver vaginally, researchers
report.
"These findings should be of concern for clinicians and policy
makers who are observing the rapid growth in the number of primary
cesareans to mothers without a medical indication," said Marian
McDorman, who led the study.
The team, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in
Atlanta, Georgia, analyzed data on more than 5.7 million live births
and 12,000 infant deaths over a 4-year period. The researchers
focused on women with a singleton full-term gestation and no
indicated medical risks or complications.
They found that, overall, infants born to these low-risk women had a
low incidence of neonatal death, at about one in 1000 live births.
However, further analysis showed that those delivered by cesarean
section had twice the risk of death as those delivered vaginally.
This is worrying because the overall rate of cesarean delivery rose
by 41 percent between 1996 and 2004 in the USA, while the incidence
in women with no indication for cesarean almost doubled.
*My guess is that these women with "no indication", are sectioned
due to medical practice and not really by "choice". When a woman is
unsupported, frightened, frustrated and exhausted in labor and
says "just cut it out of me!!", she is not "opting" or consenting to
surgery (keep in mind that she already signed the - unread - consent
form when she was admitted). She is feeling desperate, not well
informed.

I am putting together a Birthing Again class for couples who are
expecting their second or subsequent baby, and who have taken a
childbirth class before.
We will have an evening session for the women only on Friday,
September 22, from 7:30 to 9:30 at La Madeleine in Duluth. The class
for couples will meet on Saturdays from 1:30 to 4:00 pm on the 23rd
and 30th. The Saturday afternoon classes will meet in the
Lawrenceville classroom location.
Please let Teresa know if you are interested in taking this class!

Subject: The Today Show Doula Segment
Dear Tonya and Sally,
I wanted to share with all of you at ICAN that the Today Show (NBC, channel
4) has produced a segment for The Weekend Edition on doulas and I am honored
to have been the doula they used as the subject. The segment airs this
Sunday, August 13th during their show from 9am-10am. If you can't watch it
live, it will be posted on the NBC website along with an excerpt from my
recently published book, "The Birth That's Right For You" (McGraw-Hill).
This offers great visibility and testimony, albeit three minutes worth (not
exactly "real time" labor), to the work doulas do for women and families on
network television.
Respectfully,
Lisa

heather is is done on a demand basis with four couples
needed to teach the classes- so with the holiday
months it is harder to get couples to commit without
tons of conflicts with holiday parties... but tamara
would be the one who made the plans for the next
one....

heather thanks for asking- the truth is this series is taught on a
demand basis... and the fall is a difficult time with the holiday
months- but tamara if she gets enough interested couples, happily does
this class with the frequency that couples demand.... but she has to
have at least four couples to make it happen--- In

Will the Birthing Again Class be offered again this fall? I'm
interested in attending, but am out of town on 8/19... I looked on
your website and the calendar for this group, but didn't see another
class listed yet. Thanks!

Hopefully one day the excessive use of electronic fetal monitors during labor will be curbed too -- that will cut down a few hours of continuous ultrasound exposure for the fetus...
The Birthing Again Class taught by Tamara Ashley has been rescheduled--
it will be delayed by one week. If you are interested in taking this
refresher class, please contact Teresa.
The new dates are Friday, August 11 from 7:30 to 9:30 pm (women only);
and two Saturdays, August 12 and 19 from 10 am to 12:30 pm (couples).
The Fall/Winter Kidsignments event is nearing! This event is only held
twice a year at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds so don't miss this one!
The Fall event dates and times are:
Tues. Aug. 22 9am -7pm (no infants, children,strollers, carriers
until after 1pm)
Wed. Aug. 23 9am -7pm
Thurs. Aug. 24 9am -7pm
Fri. Aug. 25 9am -6pm
Sat. Aug. 26 9am -6pm (Saturday-Items are 1/2 price unless tag has a

Make sure to bring a good size container (or two) when you come to
shop! There are so many wonderful items that you will want to buy that
you will need something big to carry them in! Remember that the
checkout lines can be very long for on the first sale day so please
make sure to bring (if you can) a friend, your list, a book (for the
line), a snack and patience.
This is a great time to plan ahead for the holidays and stock up on
those great bargains for gift giving too! My kids know that Santa
needs advance planning and start their lists very early each year! : )
The Infant and Child CPR Class scheduled for August 5th from 1:30 to
3:30 pm is full, so we have scheduled another class for September 16th
from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. This class is taught by Natalie Coleman who is an
American Heart Association certified instructor. The cost is $35 per
couple payable the day of the class. You must RSVP to the class since
the class is limited to only five couples. It is taught on a as
demanded basis- let me know if you want a class soon.
Yeah! Pictures! I've got quite a few from the Farm this weekend ;)
