Re: [alaboroflove_webgroup] a great pediatrician would...

Those are some great points Teresa.

Parenting styles vary and I am sure I can be supportive of parents that choose attachment parenting.  Co sleeping is a mixed bag because I think that it is safest for infants to sleep swaddled on their backs in a crib with a firm mattress and no toys or pillows.  This is consistent with the recommendations of the AAP's "Back to Sleep" program, which has effectively reduced the number of SIDS deaths in the US.  I enjoyed having my infant in my bedroom with me, but she slept separately from me.  They also have cribs now that attach to the side of the bed for even greater convenience for breastfeeding moms.  Statistically, the incidence of SIDS drops a lot between 4-6 months of age and after 6 months I am not sure it matters so much one way or the other.  Of course, infants should never sleep with other children.

I was not previously aware that attachment parents choose not to vaccinate or selectively vaccinate but that's not saying much because I don't know much other than what Teresa teaches in her parenting class which probably just scratches the surface.  I really do like to learn new things though.  I plan on having a library with a wide selection of books so that everyone can see what is out there.

I do recommend the vaccine schedule for infants published jointly by the AAP, AAFP, and CDC.  A product called Pentacel combines 5 vaccines into one injection and has just been approved by the FDA.  I am excited about that because my infant needed four injections at 2 and 4 months and with this new product they can get 3 shots at 2 months and no more than 2 shots thereafter.  Vaccines are not perfect or without side effects but I chose to vaccinate my infant because I wanted to protect her from serious bacterial infections like pneumonia, blood infections and meningitis.  Some pediatricians will discharge you from their practice and ask you to find another doctor if you refuse to vaccinate.  I feel this is unethical and that all children should have a "medical home" and access to great care regardless of their vaccination status.  I do ask parents to sign a liability waiver because it is a serious thing to choose not to vaccinate and I like to make sure that I discuss it on a case by case basis so that we can do the right thing for every individual baby.  Delaying vaccines until they are older defeats the purpose of protecting young infants who are the most vulnerable to having serious infections.  None of us likes to get shots and we all feel pain with it but I can honestly say that in my experience infants tolerate it much better and do not have the same memory of it as toddlers and young children.
