>Call for Submissions: Alternative Birth Anthology, vol. 1
The goal of this project is to showcase individual voices in the
alternative birth movement, providing a forum for parents, doulas,
midwives, childbirth educators, and activists who are part of the
national grassroots effort to promote holistic, woman-centered
pregnancy and childbirth practices in the United States.
Submissions:
Please submit material that you feel should be included in this
volume. Possibilities include birth stories, photographs, articles,
commentaries, book reviews, interviews with activists in the field,
artwork, poetry, home remedies, etc.
Writers’ Guidelines:
We will consider birth stories, articles, editorials, book reviews,
interviews, natural remedies for pregnancy/birth and other relevant
material. Topics should focus on alternatives to the prevailing
medicalized system of birth in the United States. We would
particularly like to hear from women who have been able to birth on
their own terms within the
medical system, or who have tried and failed. Experiences with
doulas/birth plans, midwives, and other attempts to have a satisfying
birth within the system are particularly relevant. We want to include
articles on parient’s rights, VBAC bans, informed consent and
refusal. We would also like to hear from homebirth moms, midwives, and
advocates of unassisted birth about their experiences of rejecting
the system altogether. Please do not submit items that you have
published elsewhere, unless we can get permission for a reprint from
the original publication. For birth stories, including photographs
will increase the chance that your story will be chosen for
publication. Please
include a brief biographical sketch, your name, address, phone number,
and email address on the first page of your manuscript as well as your
name and the page number on subsequent pages.
Photographers’ Guidelines:
We are interested in photos of pregnant women, particularly labor and
birth photos of women in active labor/birth positions, photos of
doulas/midwives at work, prenatal yoga, photos of women participating
in birth rallies/protests, breastfeeding, etc. Permission must be
granted by the individuals appearing in the photo for its inclusion in
the book. $500.00 will be paid for the photograph chosen for the cover
of volume
You may send us photocopies, reprints, digital photos, or
low-resolution scans for submission, but we will request the original
if your photo is chosen for publication.
