Karen,

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately we didn't make the AHC
conference. I would be interested in his name and number if anyone can
find it. Thanks!

Hi Kelly

If you want to make sure there is money left to your child(ren) when you
die you can use whole or univeral life insurance. It's best to buy when
you and premiums are lower b/c of age. However, if you have set up a
special needs trust, you can buy above and/or a cheaper insurnace called
2nd to die. It means benefits are paid out only after both of you (if
you are married) are gone. And if you have any assets that you want
left to your child put it into a special needs trust. THeir are
attorneys that specialize in this and shop around for best cost. We set
one up several years ago for about $2,000. At the AHC mtg, there was a
lawyer who spoke on this topic. I believe he had a special needs son.
His name is???? Does anyone have his name/number for Kelly. I will
keep looking for my conference folder to find name.

Just remember that state(s) each is different, only allow a very small
amount of money (usually less then 2000) to be in child/adults name if
they want to qualify for state assistances (SSDI or SSI) which you want
them to unless you have a very wealth estate that can support them for
their adult life if they are unable to earn income. A lawyer can help
you with more specifics.

Good luck, it's smart to plan ahead if you can.

Karen

Does anyone have any knowledge about what type of life insurance
policies parents of special needs children should carry? I had read an
article quite some time ago that said you should not carry a term policy
if you have a child with special needs. My husband and I are meeting
with a financial planner in January, but we'd like to know if anyone has
any experience with making this life insurance decision.

Hi everyone, does anyone have the alphasmart neo for their child and do
you like it? We want to get one for Jocelyn for school work and to be
able to type in first letter or spell word when we can't understand
her. We have not had success with the other communication devices with
pictures because of having to change screens so much to get to the word
/concept she wants. The neo looks lightweight.
thanks, Heather, mom to Jocelyn, 10 1/2 yrs
